Today In Freak Baseball Injuries: Michael Barrett
Thursday, July 03, 2008
At first I thought I had seen something like this before, but the more and more I think about it, I don't think I have. At least to this degree. Padres catcher Michael Barrett was batting in the third inning of last night's game against the Rockies when he fouled the ball off....straight into his face....
Man, what is going on with Baseball these days? It's not like people are colliding in the field. They're all near the plate and people are just getting destroyed. The ump got stabbed with the broken bat, Felix Hernandez almost broke his ankle, two nut shots with one broken ball and now a foul ball to the grill. Just craziness.

That happened to a girl on the softball team at the school I work at. Bunted a pitch straight into her eye and left a shiner that pretty much lasted all season.
I have a serious question. Why do you give your best stuff to Deadspin? I saw two of your first three posts on the Deadspin Morning Call before I even came here. To me, that makes your stuff seem too old.
What do you expect from a guy who's hitting about .150 this season?
I wonder what hit him harder: that baseball or Carlos' fists.
Gotta agree with Bedheaded. The announcer still hasn't admitted that he was wrong. I don't know if it's the same guy but even as he's watching the replay he doesn't want to admit it. "Let's see... see it didn't..it came right off..."
If Bud makes hitters wear face guards like they're Little Leaguers, that will be stupid. It's bad enough that the base coaches have to wear helmets.
Thermal54:
The baseball knocked him out of the game.
Carlos' fists knocked him out of baseball relevancy.
Advantage: Carlos' fists.
/Yeah, I suck
Girl on the softball team = Michael Barrett.
Nuf Said.
Also the other night against the Dodgers, Astros catcher Humberto Quintero was hit square on top of the head by Luis Maza's bat as he followed through. I've never seen anything like what Barrett did though, kind of hard to do that unless you're bunting I'd think.
Before you know it, the ball will be going off the outfield polls and will bounce all the way back to the pitcher.
It may seem insane, but if two catcher nut shots (including a broken testicle) and that crazy foul ball that bounced right into his face can happen all in one week....you never know.
I actually did that to myself. Gave myself a concusion
Not to mention the sterling play call: "he got hit right in the face with a fastball. Nope, the fastball hit him square in the face. See? He hit it and then it hit him right in the face."
