AA, The Tournament, And YOU!
Wednesday, March 18, 2009
Hey all, your fearless leader here. Just wanted to let you know that for at least the first few days of the Tournament, you'll be getting open threads once again. It's not because I'm lazy, but rather because I'll be in Philly for the first round games! While the matchups aren't exactly what I would have hoped for, it still should be a blast. Nothing better than spending a day watching Basketball in the middle of the week.
So what does that mean for you? Well every year, I like to do my best to give round by round quotes from the announcers, and this year I need your help! If you're watching the first couple of days of the Tournament, and you hear someone say something hilarious (and you're near a computer), help a brother and post it within the open thread. I should have the first two rounds up early Monday, and then when can figure out what to do the rest of the way later on that week.
Thanks for all of your help, your continued patronage, and enjoy the best day of the year tomorrow!

@ Kevfu: Visit Zap2it or TitanTV and put in your zipcode and all and you should find the information you are looking for.
There is also a list of various ones available at the 506.
http://the506.com/yabb/YaBB.pl?num=1237304294
Hope that helps!
JFein and 49er16 will be live-blogging the action with Coveritlive.
I will also be a part of liveblogapaloozajamboroo from Friday evening onwards.
Enjoy the games! Maybe you'll meet Dick Enberg!
Or tell Jay Bilas "THANK YOU!" for his comment on Dick Vitale.
Hopefully we will not have too much stupidity from Brando and Bolerjack.
Hopefully Gus Johnson is still scheduled to do the games Friday and only has to apologize for this story hitting the Web.
It's not simply which game I'm showing. I need to know if its the Constant feed, or wrap around coverage. If I'm going to be stuck watching Duke-Binghamton regardless of score, I need to leave my home to watch better games (don't trust MMOD).
Zap2It and Titan TV may not be of help if they're not updated. Check your local CBS station's website -- it should have an NCAA schedule link.
NYC gets Butler, UConn, Villanova and Duke today; Syracuse, Pitt, Louisville and Ohio State tomorrow.
Can't wait for Tip Off. Let's do this dance. - BettorFan
Here is a live blog of the tournament if anyone is interested.

I guess AA is not putting up another open thread so this is it.
"He is working up on Johnson." - Jim Nantz
"They already have 4 fouls, so they are a third of the way there, err, 4th of the way there." - Clark Kellogg
From 49er16:
"A little to un-selfish, underneath."-Tim Brando
Can you be too un-selfish?
From 49er16:
"A little nylon, to get it going."-Tim Brando UGGGHHH
Maybe I ought to develop a collection and post them all at once...
"The iron down right rude."-Tim Brando As the ball gets stuck on the rim.
With Butler cutting their deficit to 15-11: "It's a one and a quarter possession game right now."
-Hubert Davis
Via 49er16: "Cal St. Northridge stating that they are the 15th seed with a bullett." - Tim Brando
Poor choice of words by Brando there. Northridge is one of the worst places in California when it comes to crime.
anybody else have trouble with MMOD?
"He gets that guy behind him and takes him for a ride." - Clark Kellogg
Via 49er16: "Let if flow and let it go."-Tim Brando
Talking about Robert Salle making another three.
Just a reminder, we are doing a live blog of the tournament over at:
http://keithssportsjournal.blogspot.com/
"They don't necessarily have to score, but the ball has to touch the rim every time they are down there." - Clark Kellogg
"Butler; 3 miles outside of downtown Indiana." - Jim Nantz, not a master of geography.
Via 49er16: "Salle continues to bark." - Tim Brando
"He had a chance to do what he does best and that is put it in the hole." - Clark Kellogg
Via 49er16: "They are parting off of the 405." - Tim Brando
Obviously he has never been to Southern California, because I-5 runs by Northridge and not the 405.
Via 49er16: "I can't drive 55, in Kansas City."-Tim Brando referring to the score of the game which is 55 all.
Also though that was a bad reference to a Sammy Hagar song from the 80's.
"Oh what a spin! Spin, baby, spin!" - Tim Brando
"As our friend Bill Raftery would say, leave the lingerie." - Tim Brando
Damn...how about CS Northridge? Up 64-61 on Memphis with 8:13 to go. Make that 64-63.
"SPIN BABY! SPIN!" - Tim Brando
Anyone sense a pattern here?
The fighting Paula Abdul's are hanging tough.
Tim Brando as usual got waaaay ahead of himself.
Carter Blackburn is the best young announcer in the business.
"He was bothered by the head from Anderson." - Tim Brando
"I don't think I've seen a spread like that where a guy's previous career high is 13 and he scores 32."
-Kellogg
Are you kidding? That happens all the time. How do you think guys increase career highs?
Nice effort Northridge...
Tim Brando trying to show off how much he does not know.
I'm trying to watch UNI/Purdue on MMOD and I'm getting audio from a Rays spring training game???
For those depending on us for final scores.....
LSU 75, Butler 71
Memphis 81, Cal State Northridge 70
Texas A&M 79, BYU 66
I noticed that too, someone screwed up the audio on that one.
It's fixed now though.
I am 3-0 so far. I did not get Paula Abdul'ed by Cal State Northridge.
Jim Calhoun could be out for a while, although I don't believe anything Mike Freeman says.
Kevin Harlan and Dan Bonner is a middle of the road pairing.
Jim Nantz and Clark Kellogg could be a legendary pairing.
Northern Iowa disappointing everyone that picked them.
Why on earth was the camera placed so that we see the back of Kevin Harlan's head during the announcer shot?
North Carolina about to go without Lawson, supposedly.
Kevin Harlan is not as smart as you think.
Offensive foul on Purdue.
Northern Iowa is not going to the basket as much as they should.
That is a huge three there.
Good play there.
Jim Nantz and Clark Kellogg could be a legendary pairing.
Um....no. They are a good pairing, a lot better pairing than Nantz and Packer were, but I am not sold, Nantz is too monotone and Kellogg, while certianly a big time improvement over Billy Packer, is not even close to great. Give it 5 years or so, and then we'll talk about legendary. And you also might want to throw 1 or 2 really dramatic games in there where the pair shined.
Close to ten seconds.
I just said could be. They are not there yet.
How long do you drive, Dan?
And why don't you fly?
North Carolina about to go without Lawson, I think.
Ugh. Nathan, if you are going to provide PbP commentary, go start a live blog with CoverItLive.com. It's easy and free. But please, do AA a favor and leave this open thread to serve it's originally intended purpose, and that is to leave announcing quotes.
Yes, North Carolina can play without Lawson.
From 49er16: "I like Greg Anthony's upset pick of Mississippi St. over Washington"- Tim Brando
He always has a major rager over the SEC. He is to the SEC as Mike Patrick is to the ACC.
"They had to win their conference championship just to get into the NCAA Tournament." - Jay Bilas
Duh. They are a 16 seed for goodness sakes. It is rare that a 16 seed was not a conference tourney winner. And this was said while making a point about how Chattanooga is not an average 16 seed because their star got injured the first game of the year.
"This is not a debate team, this is the NCAA Tournament." - Jay Bilas
Genius! Sheer genius!
I don't have an exact quote, but Brando just said something along the lines of "Randal beared down for Cal."
RJBO, I was just at the Metrodome open practice and can verify, without any doubt, that GUS! will be doing the games.
For a stretch of this game, UConn outscored Chattanooga 46-5. No lie.
During the late stages of the MD-Cal game, CBS accidentally switched feed from basketball to an episode of "The Price is Right" right at 5pm Eastern. They switched back within a minute or so. I would have posted a youtube, but due to potential copyright infringement, held off doing so.
"He just checked in to the game for Washington State." - Kevin Harlan during the Washington-Mississippi State game.
"They've got fans in full throat today in Portland." - Kevin Harlan making no sense.
I think we should start a drinking game any time any announcer says "ball movement" or dribble penetration
"Isaiah Thomas streaks the other way for two." - Kevin Harlan
Eww.
"New CSI episode, Thursday April 9." - Kevin Harlan
The problem: The graphic at the bottom of the screen said April 2. Nice one, CBS.
"He is listed at 210, but I think that is with 2 anvils in his pockets."
-Dan Bonner on Jarvis Bernardo of Mississippi State
Dan Bonner just gave us the quote of the round. Two anvils in his pockets?
Oh yeah, I know Miss St over U-Dub was that sexy 13 over 4 seed upset.....but unless the Bulldogs make a big comeback that ain't gonna happen.
TRANSLATION: 80% chance it will happen.
"Brockman with his 59th double double of the season."
Kevin Harlan.
YES!!! WASHINGTON TO THE NEXT ROUND!!
Now the fun part....should I root for Washington to beat Purdue or my bracket?
did I hear Kevin Harlan use "ramrodding"
"Trevor Booker plays bigger than any 6'7" person in America." - Mike Gminski
"Oglesby with a return to sender." - Tim Brando I can't be switched to Nova-American soon enough...
"The tall timber from Clemson a factor early in this game." - Captain Randomness Tim Brando
From the Westwood One radio broadcast of MD / Cal, after a MD player apparently pulls up his shorts:
Kevin Tighe(pxp):"dont want to have
anything bad happen at a family event like the NCAA tournament"
Pete Gillen (analyst): "You gotta keep your pants on"
Via SSR: "The people in Detroit are saying "GIVE US MORE MONEY!" - Tim Brando, who followed that up with a Meeeechigan comment.
"Manny just being Manny from downtown!" - Tim Brando
"Anderson did not go out of bounds, he was bumped by America." - Dick Enberg
"Oh the bank is open in Kansas City." - Tim Brando describing a bankshot.
"Gonzaga with their first lead."-Kevin Harlan
Gonzaga has already lead before in this game.
completely off topic
Peter Gammons on Baseball Tonight
"Clayton Kershaw dominated the Rockies today. He looked like a young Jon Lester."
how old is Lester?
i thought so
"A lot of DNA left on the floor tonight." - Brando
"A lot of blood, cotton swabs, are we here for CSI?" - Brando
From SSR: "This game has been a root canal for Clemson." - Brando
From 49er16: ""He was being outed by Chis McKnight."- Kevin Harlan
That just sounded weird.
From 49er16: "He's taking it right in the mouth." - Dan Bonner, talking about an Akron player being knocked to the floor
Methinks that's the gem of the tournament thus far.
uh Dick, George Mason came from the Colonial not the Patriot League
"That brings back memories of my wedding night."-Kevin Harlan, talking about a song they played coming back from break.
Or at least I think that's what he meant.
...they were talking about "The Humpty Dance" LMAO
that song was the humpty dance....they "danced" to it.....ok
Tim Brando has actually gotten worse....
"Instead of falling in love with the 3-point line like they did in the first half, they have fallen in love with the free throw line this half." - Jay Bilas on how Nova was able to comeback. He is right about the strategy, but did he have to word it like that?
Nathan Brice, on behalf of all of us here, would you please SHUT THE FUCK UP!
And anyone who tells me "Stay Classy" will get what they deserve.
"Villanova, in front of the home folks at Villanova." - Greg Gumbel
Um, first of all, the game is being played in Philadelphia (South Philly, to be precise) and not Villanova, secondly, Villanova is its own separate town just outside of the city of Philadelphia!
Tim Brando (on Oliver Purnell's winless streak in the NCAA Tournament):
"He had high seeds before. Lost as a four-seed in Spokane to Weber State about nine years ago."
(Uhh, that was Tulsa, in 2003)
"You gotta bring your slingshot and be ready to go." - Clark Kellogg
Word verification: hoties
WINNUH!
A different type of bracket:
http://onfrozenblog.com/2009/03/19/best-bracket-ever.html
http://survivingtheworld.net/
Via flmesfn3: "He has a cross-eye forest grant look" - Brando
Via Flmesfn3: "It reminds me of the love of Peyton & Eli Manning" Brando - about the love of Taylor & Blake Griffin
Once again, from flmesfn3: "He is superman, with out the cape" Brando - about Blake Griffin
"Flying through the air with ease, without a trapeze" Brando again about Blake Griffin
Ah, I like Bilas. Talking about Anthony Grant, he knows his Dayton history... a Roosevelt Chapman reference.
From SSR: "You saw there that Maynor was able to shove that gear shift.....into fast." - Dick Enberg
From flmesfn3: "Hey big brotha, why don't you feed me one" Brando - don't try to be hip
Somebody should post a clip of Dick Enberg Shouting at some one
I want to see it as I was too buzy watching MMOD Coverage
Wow, Greg Gumble calling the MEAC kid for "easily the most bush league play of the tournament."
Was the two-points comment a wrestling reference?
Via flmesfn3: "I'm hoping the Nature Boy Ric Flair to come out here" - Gminski & Brando decides to pull the Nature Boy "Whoooo" we don't need that Brando
Errr... Morgan State (they're in the MEAC!)
"Larry Sanders shot...shocking..block.....SHOCKING BLOCK SHOTTING..." - Dick Enberg
"Aboya's 2 out of 3." - Dick Enberg
Graphic clearly states that Aboya is 3 for 3.
I love Dick Enberg and he will always be one of the best in my heart, but he has...pretty much lost it.
anyone catching the VCU band leader. that dude is serious
I agree with Adam completely. He's really good, if not great, but his time has come to step down before he becomes a complete joke.
Or at least just step off of basketball and football. The guy still calls tennis like nobody's business. But the fast pace of the NCAA tournament is killing him. Give Carter Blackburn the first two rounds with Bilas and leave Kevin Harlan or Ian Eagle in for the Sweet 16 and Elite 8.
During Duke-Binghamton:
Clark Kellogg : "Look at Singler coming out to guard the three" (as Singler collapses toward the basket off a screen, leaving the BU player w/ the ball a wide-open three)
Ian Eagle on Steven F. Austin's poor shooting percentage in the first half against Syracuse:
"[The Lumberjacks] are 'Stone Cold.'"
Bah Gawd! Bah Gawd! Bah Gawd They're Stone Cold!
WHAT?
From: Listening on the Radio, "Kentucky leads 9-8." - Guy on Westwood One for Okla St/Tenn game.
During Kansas game: "Don't let the metal up off the pedal."
Wow... Really?
Also, I wasn't around a computer yesterday, but during the MD/Cal game there was a misspoken phrase that produced "Beautiful black back door," which I got a chuckle out of.
Greg Anthony, during halftime highlights, "Hard to believe that even though they are shooting 60%, Syracuse is only up 16."
The score is 38-22. Does he want them to be winning by 50?
I know it's early in the morning in Boise, but could the lighting in that arena be any worse? Come on fellas these games are going to be on TV.
@Jeff: I thought the same thing...you shouldn't see shadows on the floor!
Via 49er16: "A little hit on the crazy bone." - Bolerjack
Ian Eagle was just explaining how he is trying hard not to use any Christmas puns (he is calling the Temple game with Dionte Christmas). He then said how if Bill Raftery was there he would be saying, "It's Christmas-time!"
The Raftery impersonation sounded pretty good.
Ian Eagle just did a great impression of Raft! He was talking about how he would fight with every urge in his body not to make the lame Christmas pun that every announcer likes to make when they are calling a Temple game (their star player is Dionte Christmas) and he was saying how if Raft were here, Raft would say, "It's Christmas time!" in his Bill Raftery voice. Too funny!
If you check out the "On The DL" podcast (on which Awful Announcing has been featured multiple times), the Ian Eagle podcast is HILARIOUS. And he does a Raf imitation and also gives the origin of "ONIONS!"
BTW, was anyone else disappointed in Gus Johnson's call today? He literally said "BAM" for every dunk. And they were two great games (KU/NDSU + UD/WVU). It was a sub-par, un-Gus like performance. I'm hoping for bigger things from our favorite PUUURRREE broadcaster tonight (BC/USC + MSU/RMU).
Eagle on Arizona State's Darrell Glasser: "[The Sun Devils'] Derek Glasser is scorching hot!"

Very depressing news coming out of Miami.....
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/basketball/ncaa/mens-tournament/03/20/miami.death.ap/index.html?eref=si_topstories
"That fellow just flew in having just competed in the Iditarod dog sled race." - Verne Lundquist on an oddly dressed fan.
And supposedly Bob Wenzel made compared Florida St. to an airport...
"That fellow did not just come from the Iditarod." - Verne Lundquist on another fan, following up from his earlier comment.
Via 49er16: " 'Garden variety."-Raft
Brad Sham on WW1 Radio made reference to the NDSU being in Fargo and their fans looking for a woodchipper.
"You gotta be able to move as the ball moves." - Jay Bilas on UCLA's defense.
Via SSR: "That's his first point. No make it 4 for Collison." - Dick Enberg
"UCLA and the Pac-10 does not play the way the Big East does." - Dick Enberg
I'm pretty sure that can be a nominee for the Captain Obvious quote of the year.
Just a few minutes ago, in the Nova game, discussion came to the 1971 championship game, where UCLA beat Villanova in the Astrodome.
After that, Dick and Jay discussed how the game is so much different today, more intense to be exact. They then said that it was the short-shorts they wore back then that were constricting; that's not a mental image I wanted to have, but then Enberg uttered a vomit-worthy comment, "I've still got mine", referring to him still having a pair of short-shorts! Why did you want to give the viewing audience that horrifying image, Dick?
Via SSR: "This is a game for men." - Jay Bilas
GROUNDBREAKING!
Also via SSR: "Reggie Love.....Reggie Reading." - Grandpa Enberg
Via SSR: "Hit him in the backside, that's a good idea." - Jay Bilas
Via flmesfn3: 1 minute in "In the M&M side of the bracket' - Brando
And Brandofest 2009 has officially resumed!
Via SSR: "Well the bank is open in Kansas City on Saturday." - Brando...who used this line on Thursday
CBS' Bob Wenzel, with about 16:13 left in the second half of FSU vs. Wisconsin, basically called all Africans stupid.
http://blog.operation-nation.com/2009/03/21/bob-wenzels-commentary-marred-great-ot-game.aspx
Via SSR: "Tigers lead by a dozen. They've got the eye of the tiger." - Brando
"As Craig Austrie hits the 3, no, it's a 2." - Dick Enberg
"Thabeet just got a part of anatomy to his mouth".... Need I say more?
Jay Bilas - "Most of the times you need a saddle to ride a guy like that"
Via flmesfn3: "Back to the corner men" Brando making a boxing reference & the physicality of the game is what you would see on the football field
Via flmesfn3: "If you want to call a chip a boulder. You got it" Brando
"He has been a load for the Huskies today."
Kevin Harlan, referring to Jon Brockman
Listening to the Kansas/N.Dak.State game on the radio (Westwood One, of course) on Thursday.
As they're coming back from a break, the color analyst is harping on a few things NDSt isn't doing well. The main guy says, "Well, after those comments, these fans here from Fargo might be looking for a woodchipper to feed you into!"
Color guy: "Woodchipper? Gee, that's a little harsh, don'tcha think? Heh heh. Where would you even get one of those?"
Play-by-play guy: --pause-- "In Fargo." --waits another beat while his partner STILL doesn't get it-- "...Anyway, back to the action, as Kansas inbounds the ball..."
During the Dayton-Kansas game, Gus Johnson completely forgot what game he was doing. Gus Johnson read the score of the Wisconsin-Xavier game, even saying Wisconsin-Xavier, as if it was the game he was calling when in fact, as mentioned above, he was calling Dayton-Kansas.
Via flmesfn3: "He uses the left side to bang people" Wenzel
Via SSR: "They will bang with Xavier on the boards" - Wenzel
Via SSR: "Man-sized rebound there!" - Wenzel
Here's the exact quote that I mentioned at 5:19 via SSR: "Xavier 8 Wisconsin 5.....excuse me....Kansas 4 Dayton 2." - Gus Johnson read the wrong scoreline
Via JFein (a.k.a. me): We got a double onions." - Verne Lundquist on Raftery's call of the end of the Siena-OSU game.
Via 49er16: Even, Steven so far."- GuJo, talking about the score in the USC-MSU game
Via 49er16 "Green just took one on the nose."- GuJo
Via SSR: Hackett pops out wide open. And strokes it." - GuJo
Via SSR: "Horns gets a blow." - BolerJACK
Via SSR: "Measure this one." - Wenzel
Via SSR: This is so deep they should give him 4 instead of 3." - Wenzel on an NBA range 3.
Via SSR: "This time Taj Gibson called for too much banging down low." - GuJo
Via SSR: "Had he been size 11 instead of size 13 he would've been okay." - Wenzel on the Marquette player stepping in-bounds on the in-bounds pass and essentially costing his team the game.
Via SSR: "If he hits this one, Marquette will have to score twice." - Wenzel, a.k.a. "CAPTAIN OBVIOUS IDIOT!"
I just want to say Ian Eagle is the best!
Does this mean I can stop constantly hitting F5, hoping you post the CBS coverage maps?
