Ex-Eagles Employee Talks About "Facebook Firing"

Tuesday, March 10, 2009

I linked to this yesterday in the Daily Links, but it really took legs last night with mentions on all of ESPN's networks. An Eagles game-day employee was fired for posting a comment on Facebook ("Dan is f**king devastated about Dawkins signing with Denver. . .Dam Eagles R Retarted!!"), following the team's decision to let Brian Dawkins go, and today Dan Leone talked to ESPN Radio in Philly about the firing. Here's the full audio from ESPN 950 via SRI....

Man, I didn't even realize they fired him over the phone. That's just low. I mean, I sort of understand the organization being somewhat upset, especially when you use the term retarded, but only about 100 of this guy's random friends even had the opportunity to see the comments. Plus, it wasn't like he was posting or using Facebook at work. It was in the privacy of his own home. I think we'll be seeing an out-of-court settlement in the near future.

If you slander your employer, you have to deal with the consequences. Like all Eagles fans, this guy is incompetent.

Didn't he say that the team was "retarted"?

Slandering your employer in front of his/their face is one thing, doing it on your private Facebook while on your private computer at home is another, and getting fired for the latter is just insane. I mean, how do you condone it? Now if he went up to Joe Banner and showed him the bird, then yeah, okay, fire the man. But firing someone for saying on their private Facebook??? And it was not even that slanderous. While slightly offensive, "retarded" has (sadly) taken a whole different meaning than what it was originally intended to mean. Now it seems as if it synoymous with "stupid" when that is not the case. And what, no one has ever said that their employer was "stupid" or "retarded" in private?

And then they go ahead and fire him over the phone? As Leone said, they could not call him into the office and discuss it? They could not even discuss it on the phone? He gets a phone call and 10-minutes later Leone is in the unemployment line.

The Eagles have had an absolutely nauseating off-season.
