Tiger And Rocco For All The U.S. Open Marbles, Tomorrow

Sunday, June 15, 2008

What a finish, but it's not over yet! It was a battle of attrition just about the entire day, and even though he struggled early and was grimacing after every drive, Tiger Woods forced an 18-hole playoff tomorrow morning. It wasn't easy though as Woods had to hit this shot out of the rough and one putt to finally come even with Rocco Mediate on eighteen....

The guy just continues to amaze me every single time I watch him, but this was other-worldly. He was lifting up through most of his swings and even with the bad start, he still came out on top. As far as athletes go, he's in a class of his own. I also would be remiss if I didn't mention the play of Mediate who was steady and jovial throughout the round. It should be a great playoff starting at noon tomorrow. I'll be sure to keep you informed.

In the interview with Rolfing after the round and in the press conference, Tiger was asked about the pain in his knee. He said that he "took some things to take care of that". No follow up question as to what "things" those were. What? Oxycontin? Poprocks? Some over-the-counter pain reliever that he just doesn't have a sponsor deal with, so he doesn't name it?

Ahhh...I was wondering why he wasn't grimacing at the end of today's round like he was yesterday.

It's actually a bit of a downer to learn that his drugs, whatever they were, kicked in to lessen the pain. So much for wanting to believe he did one of the most amazing mental jobs ever to ignore a throbbing knee.
