Jemele Hill Says She "Hoped" Merriman's Ride Was Torched Because Of Lights Out Dance

Monday, March 31, 2008

Jemele Hill has been in the news of late mainly for jumping on the whole Lebron James racist "Vogue" magazine cover, but that didn't bother me nearly as much as this. The ESPN columnist was filling in for Jim Rome last week and when she wasn't reading poorly off of cue cards, she was mocking Shawne Merriman for having his SUV stolen and burnt....

"There are no reports to back this up, but I'm betting – and by betting I mean hoping – that whoever set that Benz ablaze busted out in that ridiculous sack dance just as the flames were starting to run rampant over the upholstery. Karma is reponsible for this. Merriman got his sled ripped and barbecued because he can't make a play without making a fool of himself, and people just aren't feeling it."
It's a shame that ESPN seems to turn certain writers into such attention getting journalistic jokes. I don't care who you are, the words "hoping", "someone's property" and "getting barbecued" are not words you should use together. It's just a celebration dance not a crime that someone should pay for. Wide Receivers celebrate every damn first down by doing some ridiculous first down signal. Should Chad Johsnon's Lexus be stolen and burnt to a crisp because of it?

If you'd spend less time trying to be controversial and more time writing heartfelt pieces.....people might begin to respect you Jemele. It's a shame because I was beginning to enjoy her work.

Torching of Merriman's car funny? Rome fill-in host seems to think so (Sign On San Diego)

After watching this is clear that Jim Rome deosn't wrtie his own stuff, other poeple do. Because Jemele Hil's "Rant" agaisnt Meriman sounded very similar to what Rome might have said deson't ti?

Very much so Anon.

JRIB is almost a TV version of the radio show and I so not think that he has writers for the radio show (unless maybe the redundant and idiotic e-mailers).

Jamele just is not a smack mama.

She's a moron.

In a desperate attempt to draw attention to herself in her limited role, she's proving that she doesn't belong with a national spotlight on her. She needs to disappear from ESPN as it's clear her need for controversy is just too big.

Also, does anyone honestly think for a second Merriman cares about his SUV getting stolen and burned? He has insurance to cover such things and even if he didn't, he could walk in and buy another one cash. 'Karma', Jemele? Karma would be you getting canned.

When Kornheiser had a show on ESPN Radio, during one of their breaks and they would be uncensored over the internet, there was talk often about Rome and his reading of takes. They also mentioned when he did one of his "tour stops" that someone found discarded cue cards of what Rome said at the event.

There are no e-mailers or callers in the TV version (anymore; that was a disaster). I will agree somewhat with the earlier Anon. When noted "smack runners" Bonnie Bernstein, Lisa Salters, Jim Gray, Josh Elliott and the ever intense Patrick McEnroe hosted, they didn't sound exactly like Rome, but they didn't sound like themselves.

I was one of 10 people to see this live, and I felt it was sad at the time because this broad is so far down the food chain, that this barely registers as offensive.

And sorry for the double post, but I know some of the members of Rome's "writing team" and I'm inclined to think that this "blast" was written for Rome. But that doesn't excuse Hill because she could have either changed it or just done something different.

Does anyone think Jim Rome is smart enough to come up with monologues every day while doing two shows?

About Hill and Rome, she can't be touched, not that I'm saying she should have her ass kicked, but she can be that little loud mouthed bitch and get away with it...Rome can always have his ass kicked, or at least shoved around a bit.

She's a little jockette like that Tilghman chick, want to be with the boys, tough girls.

Things would be different if she knew that Merriman could find her and break her in two.

Just sayin.

i used to work with rome at his first radio station in san diego. everything is written down ahead of time, so, think of that how you will. as for hill, bad dreads, pumpkin head, trying to be controversial and sounding stupid instead. just trying to get attention in a world where she wishes she was a man. that car was merriman's pride and joy. the man is bummed.

Dear Jemele,

Rome can get away with statements like that based on his years of being abrasive, you can't. Keep hiding behind the race card...I'll keep hiding behind the "you're a dumb cunt" card.

In conclusion, you aren't good.

She is a moron, its enough that she agrees with half of the stuff that that idiot Skip Bayless says but to imply that he had that coming to him because of his dancing on the football field is absurd. She just better hope that nobody ever steals her car because that would be "karma" for her alright.

Now race doesnt has anything to do with what she said about Merriman, if you dont like what she says about that Vogue cover, thats fine but thats awhole nother topic. The point is regardless of who made that comment albeit black or white, its not anybody place to hope bad things to happen to somebody because of their personal bias against somebody.

Another megalomaniacal sportswriter on TV. God, I hate these people. Blame this crap on Mark Shapiro trying to buy good press for himself. Now he's running Six Flags into the ground. Talk about a stock you should short..........

I wouldn't be so quick to lay blame for this on Jim Rome. I think Rome is a Merriman guy. If Rome is anything, it is loyal to "his" guys. He wouldn't make this kind of comment about one of "his" guys.

I think this is all Jemele.

Didn't Merriman retire the dance before the 2007 season. Get your facts straight honey.
