Sweet Sixteen Friday Open Thread

Wisconsin vs. Davidson (Detroit, 7:10pm)- Gus Johnson and Len Elmore
Texas vs. Stanford (Houston, 7:27pm)- Jim Nantz and Billy Packer
Kansas vs. Villanova (Detroit, 9:40pm)- Gus Johnson and Len Elmore
Memphis vs. Michigan State (Houston, 9:57pm)- Jim Nantz and Billy Packer

I'm going to be out of pocket (I love that term for some reason) once again for the Friday games. I'm going to try and head out into the cruel cruel world, but I'm not quite sure how people will respond to me hanging out in my underwear. I'm recording the games and will put up any videos or craziness you point out to me in the comments. Have a great night and enjoy the games!

I hope you're right, sportsfanatic, that's my bracket for the night's games.

The visual of the arena is HORRIBLE. The NCAA should be ashamed that they would rather play in a cavern with all of those empty seats in the background.

Davidson with a nice start.

Yeah. One of Davidson's players is actually nicknamed the "White Lobster".

Is it just me or does Nantz sound overly medicated. This game is going to be unbearable.

White Lobster: Cocaine dumped overboard by smugglers, and Nicaraguan fishermen catch it and call it White Lobster.

Curry isn't looking so bad. 5/13 FG with 13 points just into the second half with Davidson up 4 and Wisconsin going to the line. If Davidson can keep it close, who knows what will happen. Been a pretty good game so far.

@spartandan - it just sounds so much more annoying when Nantz does it and sounds more enthusiastic about saying that line than he did in any of his live game calls.

Gus Johnson calling Curry's dismantling of Wisconsin is good fun.

Mal said...
Mar 28, 2008, 8:39:00 PM

"Rising...and firing." Sounds like Gus Johnson is starting to get into this game as Curry starts to open up a bit. Did you guys see that fake by Curry that drew the defender completely out of bounds? Haha. Jesus, he hit that open shot like nothing. 23 points now for him so far with Davidson up 9. Keep it going, baby!

LeBron James is sitting in the Davidson section....why?

Anonymous said...
Mar 28, 2008, 8:43:00 PM

Had LeBron gone to college, Davidson is the kind of school his team would have played in the first round.

Which is greater: the number of times Packer says "Lopez twins" or the number of times Ronnie misses calls about Motorhead tickets?

LeBron would've taken Akron to the Elite 8 (if not further). And I'm a Pistons fan.

Davidson is really stretching this lead out. Man, Curry is shooting lights out. Even that circus shot Curry pulled made Lebron go "wow"

Death not an option for you in Michigan: Watch the game with Nantz/Packer or listen to the Spartan broadcast with Will Tieman/Gus Ganakas? Yeah, I know. It's like picking between ricin & strychnine.

Mar 28, 2008, 9:28:00 PM

AA, can you post the video of Curry's circus layup...that seems to be Gus' 'moment' of the 2008 tourney.

Rick James: Option #3: listen to the Spartan hockey game on the radio (they're playing Colorado College in the first round of the NCAA tournament).

the way curry has played in 3 games so far (beating #2 georgetown and #3 wisconsin along the way), anybody else think he has a chance of making the all tournament team even though davidson will lose to kansas on sunday?

i'm also hoping to get a youtube of gus' call of curry's layup (i got home late).

kansas losing would make my bracket look a lot better. i'll definitely be rooting for davidson.

anyone else see someone in the production truck give nova 73 points for their first basket?

Appreciate the help, but: Not a Spartan fan by trade, so I've chosen (ugh) Nantz/Packer. At least they can pronounce the names correctly. Thank God Kosta Koufos isn't in this game; the MSU announcing team only got that name right four times in three games.

/slight exaggeration

Mar 28, 2008, 9:59:00 PM

OOOOHHH! Gus is feeling it tonight!

Davidson really stands no chance against KU. Even if Curry puts up 50, Kansas (unlike GTown and Wisconsin) can score 100 in spite of Bill Self's ineptitude.

"anyone else see someone in the production truck give nova 73 points for their first basket?"

For some reason, the score line always flashes some number like 72 after the first score of the game before showing the correct score.

Packer made a comment about the same thing (MSU getting run out of the building in the first half) happening against UNC in the Final Four in 2005 ... except that MSU led that game at halftime. Then in the second half, the Sean May "elbow, elbow, hey where'd the defense go, DUNK!" move was made legal and UNC beat the hell out of us.

AA, I second an earlier poster's request for video of Curry's amazing reverse layup...9:10 to play in regulation. He is so smooth. And Davidson is a fun team to watch. But do the Wildcats have any chance to match up with KU's athleticism?

As for Miss-Again State, what happened to those guys tonight? Another Big Ten stinker.

Anon @ 11:15: what happened was that Memphis absolutely refused to miss any shots for about a ten-minute span, even when they were guarded reasonably well (which wasn't nearly as often as it needed to be, but also not nearly as rare as you would think given the scoring). And the few they did miss, they got the rebound. That usually causes problems.

As for the Big Ten ... even with both teams getting KO'd tonight, the conference as a whole matched the expected win total based on the seeds the teams got. Unless UNC wins it all, the ACC won't be able to claim that. Nor will the Pac-10 unless UCLA at least makes the title game, or the SEC at all (in fact, the SEC fell two games short of expectation).
