Maualuga Apologizes To Erin Andrews, Internet Stalkers Take A Step Back

Wednesday, January 07, 2009

Everyone can relax now (*whew*), Rey Maualuga is deeply sorry for his playful dancing with ESPN Sideline Queen, Erin Andrews. I'm sure you've seen the clip, but after an uproar on the internet, Rey decided that it was necessary to send Ms. Andrews and email and a phone call to apologize for his shimmy before the Rose Bowl. Via the LA Times....

Responding to inquiries from media outlets, USC issued a statement regarding a video that captured linebacker Rey Maualuga dancing behind unsuspecting ESPN sideline reporter Erin Andrews before the Rose Bowl game.

"The situation was addressed immediately," the statement said. "Rey both e-mailed and spoke to Erin and apologized to her. He realized he made a mistake and used poor judgment. He deeply regrets his actions."

Andrews has declined to comment. Maualuga could not be reached for comment.

"We appreciate the apology," ESPN spokesman Josh Krulewitz said.
All joking aside, it's good that he took the time to apologize. It was seemingly harmless, and I'm sure EA took it in stride, but it was a bit disrespectful and unprofessional. I really didn't think about it like that during the first post, so good on Maualuga to come to that understanding as well.

It's probably a sign of something when you can read "unprofessional" as a descriptor for a college student and not bat an eye, but that's big time college football for you.

I really believe this is a tempest in a teapot. Did Maualuga at any time touch EA? In any case, Rey would look great in Bronco orange and blue. With a few more defenders like him, we're in title contention!

Hank, I was thinking the same thing...why does Maualuga have to act professional?

I know she's hot, but do we really need this much coverage about Erin Andrews? I would guess that a vast majority of people in this world have no idea who she is, and that would include many pro sports fans.

Sure. While it wasn't respectful at all.. what does professionalism have to do with anything? He's a college athlete and student. If he were playing in the NFL during that, then sure... it's unprofessional. This on the other hand is just irresponsible and disrespectful.. I guess.

"disrespectful and unprofessional"?!?

You're just jealous because you weren't able to do it, AA.

I am not a "feminist", and I can take a joke. Having said that, what Rey did belittled Erin Andrews and her profession by reducing her to a sex object. I don't believe he would have made an obscene gesture behind a male sideline reporter.

She is smart not to respond, because she is in a no win situation.
