Rob Parker "Resigns" From The Detroit News

Wednesday, January 07, 2009

Last month, Rob Parker inappropriately brought up Detroit Lions' Coach Rod Marinelli's daughter during a postgame interview. Today, he's out of the job. Parker, who claimed the comments were in jest, has left the Detroit News, and his former editor doesn't even want to discuss him anymore....

Detroit News sports columnist Rob Parker has resigned from the newspaper, the paper's managing editor told Journal-isms on Tuesday. Parker had been demoted to general assignment sports reporter, the Newspaper Guild disclosed, in the fallout from a news conference question to the coach of the Detroit Lions NFL team that drew criticism from management, readers and other sports journalists.

"He doesn't work here any more," Managing Editor Donald Nauss said. He said Parker resigned on Friday. Asked whether this followed a suspension of his column, Nauss said, "I can't talk about personnel matters."

Parker, who had been at the paper for eight years, could not be reached for comment and has not responded to previous requests.
Again, there's a level of decorum that every person needs to have in a business setting, and at times we all cross the line, but occasionally some people leap across said line. It's good that something was done about it for once.

I read that he was already in hot water at the paper for something he had written about an MSU football player. The Marinelli things was the final straw.

Anonymous is right, he was almost fired in October. What an asshat. He'll probably be on Around the Horn by March.

What is being referred to about is true...on his tv segment (separate from his newspaper work) he said that the backup MSU qb was involved in an altercation that landed an MSU hockey player in the hospital.

The problem was that the player he named was nowhere near the incident...leading Mark Dantonio to call Parker out at a press conference...and to Parker having to apologize.

Parker also had a history of inappropriately antangonizing Tom Izzo for years...and Izzo let him have it one time for only showing up in east lansing once or twice a year but writing scathing columns from a distance.

He showed up on Mike and Mike this morning, did anyone hear it? I'd like to know what his take on this was.

Parker obviously went to the Jay Mariotti school of writing negative columns.

I bet "First Take" will finally name him the permanent host along with Bayless.

Parker talked himself up the whole time. He said he wasn't worry for asking Marinelli that question and basically admitted to trying to bait him into giving a quote that would suit what Parker had in mind.

He went on and on about himself and his credentials, essentially trying to sell himself for a new job.

He was completely oblivious to how much of a shithead everyone thinks he is.

The marinelli thing wasnt a big deal at all.....people are crying over that for no reason...its the MSU thing that might be more damning though.

I agree, anon. Now that he's out in Detroit, he'll have more time for First Take. That show is garbage.

I used to listen to this chump on the way home from work when he was on 97.1 with Mark Wilson and it was just about everyday where Parker would pull some "Oh, it's only the black guy you come down on" shit.

He is just an asshole.

And the question to Marinelli was so fucking out of line, "HEY COACH, HOW DUMB IS YOUR DAWWWTER FOR MARRYING THAT GUY!!!"

Yeah, he's a journalist. LOL.

It takes a lot to make Skip Bayless look competent.

Rob Parker HAS that lot.

If Tom Izzo hates him, it shows just how big of a jerk Parker is. The more I learn about this moron, the more I hate him. Who would call Hank Aaron a coward?

>>>Who would call Hank Aaron a coward?<<<

this jerk calls hank aaron a coward and aaron suffered some of the most vile, hateful racist abuse both as a minor leaguer in the jim crow south and as a record-breaker than you can imagine.

and parker calls him a coward???

now parker won't return calls concerning his firing. who the hell is the real coward here?
