Nick Faldo Goes Off On Nike, The Swoosh Is Upset

Tuesday, February 26, 2008

I rather enjoy Nick Faldo on CBS and the Golf Channel, but it seems he can occasionally go a bit too far in his critiques. The analyst recently switched from Nike to Adidas-Taylor made and he went into a lengthy explanation of how Nike's products are inferior (specifically golf balls).

Faldo apologized a hole later saying that his comments "lacked good judgement", but that wasn't enough as the Golf Channel felt the need to release a statement today....

Golf Channel also issued a statement, which read in part, "His opinions do not always reflect those of the Golf Channel. In this particular instance ... using the Golf Channel in this context was not appropriate." Nike Golf Dir of PR Beth Gast: "These comments were all the more inappropriate having come just days after he signed with TaylorMade-adidas. He has apologized on-air and we consider this isolated incident as closed."
I guess it's a bit sketchy when he just switched products a few days before the comments, and especially when you consider Nike's Golden Boy was ripping up the competition over the weekend. While it may be true, TV airwaves aren't the place to make a pitch for your new sponsor.

The Golf Channel just isn't having a good past month or so are they?

I think we all look forward to Faldo's performance in the new Indiana Jones movie.

All I heard Faldo say negative about Nike was that the ball the pros was playing was too hard for average players with lower swing speeds and that it was 20 yards shorter than the competition. BFD. Faldo is correct and it was rare moment of real honesty.

If you're a 16 handicapper and you are playing $40/dozen balls because Tiger Woods does, then you're an idiot. Better stick to the Roc-Flights, they're a lot cheaper.

You are correct to a point, he failed to mention when he ripped the ball that the Tiger Nike Ball is desinged for higher swing speeds and the tests done were simulating 20-handicappers swing. Also, the #1 ball in the test that Nike came in last was SURPRISE the new TaylorMade ball.

I think that Faldo has lost his mind this year and he needs the weekends off to wind down.

If he needs to mention Tiger's ball is designed for higher swing speeds, TV golf watchers are more moronic than those who clog up the course on the weekends.

Do you think you swing as hard as Tiger?

Faldo is a pompous blowhard. Are there only ego-maniacs like him and Johnnny Miller that can color on golf? Please, God, don't let the Euros win the Ryder Cup.
