What Happened To Jim Gray?

Monday, April 28, 2008

There have been a few people over the years that I couldn't stand no matter what (I'm sure you have your own), and near the top of the list is Jim Gray. I always felt that he would unnecessarily attack athletes at the worst times and was a first class dick. Well according to LA Daily News and Sports By Brooks, the ex-sideline reporter has fallen so far out of grace that he's wandering Sporting venues looking for work....

LA Daily News: "So there was Hollywood Walk of Famer Jim Gray, trolling the Staples Center hallways Wednesday night, a painful, vain attempt to try to stay in the TV employment loop when the fact of the matter is no one is interested in hiring the psuedo sideline reporter."

Sports by Brooks: "We’ve also heard from several, well-connected media moles that no one will now hire him (just check out the hacks roaming the sidelines during the NBA playoffs). Gray might well be done in the business."
So what gives? It's not often that someone so entrenched in the Sports Media gets ousted like this. Sure he's probably an a-hole, but so aren't a lot of other people who still have jobs.

I bet E:60 would hire him. That Tejada ambush was right up his alley.

Jim's problem is simple: he's not a jock suck-up like Ahmad; he doesn't wear funny suits and make a clown of himself like Sager; and he's not an ex-jock looking to cover for jocks. He thinks he's a reporter who's supposed to report. But it's more important that poor little-jock has his image protected.

While hearing a bit of the Masters coverage on XM Radio (can't tell you how exciting that was), they rattled off a list of the names that were covering the event. I heard the name "Jim Gray" and told myself, "Naw, can't be."

Didn't hear him on the broadcast but after seeing this, I guess it was him.

And now a recent "great" moment in Jim Gray's broadcasting career:

If only I could find that compilation from his younger days on PRISM where he looked like a complete asshole.

Yeah, Gray was interviewing golfers after the rounds at the masters

Gray was definetly at the Masters. He interviewed Tom Brokaw live on XM and Brokaw told Gray that he dumped his Knicks season tickets.

Gray also did Final Four, MNF, and Super Bowl for Westwood One.

You would figure Fox would put out a feeler. He could certaintly do NFL sideline work, BCS sideline work and he could probably get a montly E:60 type show on FSN. He also wouldn't be a bad fit on the sidelines on NFL-Network or maybe doing some interview type shows.

I will never forget his ambush of Pete Rose during the World Series.

Yeah, I feel so bad for that scumbag, liar Pete Rose because Jim Gray dared ask him a relevant question. At that time Rose was still denying betting on baseball. Seems like we should applaud Gray, not revile him.

I missed him on the last Showtime Boxing card. It was Masters weekend, but I hope he wasn't fired from that. The guy does ask the tough questions and the chick that filled in for him seemed over her head.
