So That Was A Surprise, The NFL Network Does The ND-USC Studio Show

Monday, October 22, 2007

I had no idea this was coming, but I (and S2N who alerted me of this) were surprised to see all of the NFL Network's Studio on set for the Halftime show of the Notre Dame-USC game. It was apparently planned though although no one in the industry seemed to have any notion that this change was taking place.....

The NFL Network will produce the studio halftime show for the USC vs. Notre Dame game on NBC on Saturday, Oct. 20, featuring analysis by NFL Network analysts Steve Mariucci, Deion Sanders and Marshall Faulk of NFL Total Access on Location.

The agreement between NBC Sports and the NFL Network is part of an increased collaboration between the two that also includes NFL Network’s Alex Flanagan serving as the sideline reporter for Notre Dame football on NBC, and NFL Network and NBC simulcasting the pre-game show for NFL Opening Kickoff 2007 on Sept. 6.

The Notre Dame halftime show on Oct. 20 will be produced by NFL Network game producer Mark Loomis, and will be hosted by NFL Network’s Rich Eisen.
My hatred for Eisen aside....does this seem weird to anyone else? How can a network that provides you with coverage of the NFL all week all of sudden switch to College coverage on Saturday? It makes no sense to me. Maybe the NFL Network is following the ESPN model of only caring about and reporting on USC and Notre Dame, and this was their only in? I have no idea, but it was weird and pretty awkward on that set.

This is why I'm starting to hate sports. Well, this and ESPN's two weeks of Joe Torre retrospectives.

If it ain't New York, the Lakers, USC, Notre Dame, or the Cowboys, THEY DON'T CARE. Assholes.

DON'T WATCH ESPN. You can cry all you want, and even say you recognize it, just DON'T WATCH!
There's plenty other places to get your sports news and highlights WITHOUT the 'synergy'.

While I appreciate your fervor Anon...I kinda have to watch it for the site, but if anyone else wants to tune out...be my guest.

'How can a network that provides you with coverage of the NFL all week all of sudden switch to College coverage on Saturday?'

espn does it every week

and the notion that espn only cares about notre dame and usc is ludicrous. the hardon they have for osu/michigan and florida is arguably even worse.

Oh, and the New York/Notre Dame/USC/Lakers/Cowboys bias is not "synergy." Get your facts straight before you fuss at me.

"synergy" -- the combining of forces.
the original complaint (not you AA, you're awesome) -- was tired of "ESPN's two weeks of Joe Torre retrospectives. If it ain't New York, the Lakers, USC, Notre Dame, or the Cowboys, THEY DON'T CARE."

Fox has that new half-hour show which, trust me, shows you MORE highlights than you get on ESPN -- PLUS you don't have to sit thru a Coors Light 6=pack of questions, Barry Melrose (God help us) and Peter Gammons talking 1 word a minute.
I just want the highlights, and Fox runs thru them with no extras and no bias. (except maybe toward the BCS since they televise the championship).
Give it a chance. OR you can sit and complain about ESPN knowing that they're laughing at you since you're doing the one thing they believe you're doing, STILL WATCHING.

AA write this down:
I predict by the end of the year, you'll see Hannah Montana on ESPN in some capacity to hype something Disney. Like The Rock just did with his movie. You'll see.

Sorry Mike...I meant to say...."Does it Well"

Anon- I'm not taking the Hannah Montana bet....Did you know that her two shows here in DC sold out in 2 minutes? WTF?

Does anybody here get the impression that Dick Ebersol is stripping the cupboard bare to pay for the Olympics and Sunday Night Is Football Night In America? Farming out ND halftimes to NFLN? And this after he sacked the entire NHL studio crew, and turned the play-by-play team into a traveling pre-game show? (I'll bet Ebersol made room in the budget for Mike Milbury by making him fly to games in Eddie Olczyk's carry-on bag.)

To abuse a sports metaphor... NBC has two advertising superstars in the NFL and Olympics, but their top bench players are a media pariah (NHL) and a washed-up veteran (Notre Dame football). Not much depth on that roster.

Why do you hate Eisen?

It looks like Deion started dressing up for Halloween early this year.
