Internet Rumors Are Fun, Herbstreit's Source A Prank Caller Pretending To Be Desmond Howard

Wednesday, December 05, 2007

Stephen A. Smith would love this one. An LSU Fan site has a post titled "Herbstreit's Source" that claims the College Gameday's Source was a prank caller pretending to be Desmond Howard. Again just a rumor, but how funny would it be if this is how it went down. Via Tiger Droppings...

This is what happened to Herbstreit...
1)He received a voicemail saying the deal is done, he's going to Michigan, will be announced early next week, and Tenuta is coming with him.
2)The person who did the voicemail was personating Desmon Howard and said they were Desmond
3)Desmond was in Hawaii covering the game
4)Herbstreit took this information to his supervisor WITHOUT calling Desmond back or confirming it.
5)His supervisor said run with it
6)Once it came out, Herbstreit himself started hearing things that it wasn't true.
7)They called Hawaii and woke Desmond Howard up about it.
8)Desmond knew NOTHING about it
9)Herbstreit was embarrased and still is and ESPN is trying to cover their somehow. 10)Basically he published this on a prank call
Even for something that could be made up this is pretty detailed. Maybe this is why Herbstreit said he was never going to report on anything again.

With all of that said, Les still hasn't signed the papers.

I caught some of the Dan Patrick show and he said that he knew who his source was.

And I should believe him because he is a qualified, licensed journalist expert.

I didn't know Les Miles could do a Desmond Howard voice.

okay for some reason when i first read this, i pictured lamont from sanford and son. then i thought, "wait a minute that's demond wilson." (forgive me, i'm sleep deprived.) but now that i think of it, i kind of wish the tip were coming from demond wilson.
and then maybe les could have said "you hear that michigan. I'm coming to join you honey!"

I highly doubt this is true. I'm not a big fan of Herbstreit, but I do get pretty good readings from people when they are bullshitting and when they are telling the truth.

When he came on the air after the entire fiasco to tell his side of the story... it certainly didn't look or sound like bullshit to me.

Some random guy on a LSU fansite's forum on the otherhand... well I think I have a right to say I'm not buying it.

Highly unlikely it's true. They called Howard and woke him up? Sorry, Howard was reporting live from Hawaii for Gameday anyway, teased it the entire broadcast. If Howard knew he would've had something to say on the topic during the broadcast.

Also, Howard is an idiot and nobody would ever use him as a source.

Frank Caliendo is a cold son of a bitch for pulling some crap like this.

It was probably the same dude who impersonated Steve Bartman on SportsCenter when Dan Patrick & ESPN thought they had a scoop.

The Rant? They quoted the Rant? I love that site, but to suggest it's reliable is crazy. I'd believe that lying sack of excrement Herbstreit before I'd believe a story from there!
