ESPN Is Actually Making Me Really Want To Watch Golf

Wednesday, April 09, 2008

I watched most of ESPN's Masters Coverage today and wanted to share a video and a few words. I might be jumping to this conclusion a bit too quickly but without Chris Berman involved the two (well three actually) day span covering the major Golf tournament could rival College Gameday as the best produced event/show on the network.

Mike Tirico is solid and seems to really be enjoying himself and Van Pelt's work with Andy North was stellar as well. If you're working tomorrow you can check it out online or be sure to TIVO it. It's one of the last true portrayal of a Sport without people yelling over one another and over-the-top graphics. I don't say this often, but great job today ESPN. The Par 3 Contest was fun to watch and the previews of the tournament, the course and there players were all well done. Including this one....

(P.S.- I put the vacation post up before I wanted to, so you have to deal with me for a few more posts. I'm heading out first thing tomorrow, so I'll try to get some things up before I head out)

What we do not know is if this piece was put together by ESPN or CBS Sports...

It looked like CBS graphics today.

But make no mistake that Thursday and Friday, it will be a CBS production. Their announcers. Their production crew. The only hint of ESPN will be Tirico in Butler Cabin doing interviews and the opening "welcome" and "closing." Otherwise, this is CBS's gig.

And if you noticed during the Par 3 contest ... no ESPN logos (only on the microphone by Peter Kostis during interviews) and no bottom line. That will also happen tomorrow.

I love the Masters. I love how they control the broadcasts. Yes, it's old school. But they're giving me golf. And while the announcers can be criticized for be "reverental" and all, fine. It makes it so much better when the attention is on the sporting event and not on the announcers and stupid mind-numbing graphics and the fact fat-ass Chris Berman is nowhere to be seen or heard.

Thomas Hayden Church is the man.. great voice... ESPN edited this for sure... CBS would never take such a big leap...

CBS produced the Par 3 contest. ESPN had nothing to do with it - other then airing it. That Thomas Hayden Church Tease was terrible. About 3 miles beyond over the top. It's only golf guys.
