Sweet Sixteen Open Thread- Day 1
Thursday, March 22, 2007
So I'm not going to live-blog tonight because I think I've done enough for a lifetime in the past week. What I am going to do is occasionally throw some of the funny announcing lines for the night, and other random things as I see fit. So stop by if you're bored.
If you're a Channel 4 News Team member feel free to do the same. Cheers, and enjoy the games. (Quotes and other goodness after the jump)
Jay Bilas just made a reference to "Beating off...the dribble." Basketball is dirty. [Run Up The Score]
I just love guys named Dick. Everytime you hear their name it's just funny. (AA)
"I'm sure Bill Self got into Jackson after that timeout"- Bilas (AA)
"It's like two defensive backs running into each other"- JB, talking about two players from different teams.
"The body rub goes against him....Rubba Dub Dub."- Bill Raftery
Verne just called Acie Law IV.....Acie Earl about 4 times.....Acie Earl played for Iowa in the early 90s.
You've heard Jay Bilas refer to Sherron Collins' high school football career, but have you read the Chicago phenom's player diary? I haven't either, but I'm going to now. [Extra P.]
"Protect the women and children! Send it in Uncle Joe"- BR
(Somebody let Tracy ride the Motorcycle!!!!)
"And fans want a foul as he bumped Hardaway from the ball"- Enberg, Tim Hardaway probably appreciated that.
I'm pretty sure Jay Bilas has called Wright....long and athletic.....about 14,000 times. And yes....we know he can't shoot.
"It's like a fumble out there"- DE
"And like a fumble the KEY is possession"- JB
Umm....thanks Jay....never knew that.
Whoa. A wasp on the backboard. That was crazy. "It's Kansas getting stung!"- JB
"FLOOR BURN U.....for both teams!"- DE
"They've got a number of scorers who can get into the lane without charging." - JB - I think we can all appreciate a ballhandler who goes about their business without getting too rough (One More Dying Quail)
"Arthur with his 4th as he reaches in from behind"- DE
"Jamaal Tatum.....THE GUTS OF A BURGLAR!!!"- JB
"AND YOUNG TO WIN IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!"- DE, Umm yeah, it's the last play of the game, and they're down three. Unless we're playing Rock N' Jock...I don't think there's a 4-point basket.
P.S.- THAT'S why I don't like Enberg.
"They're going to make him think about it"- BR
"Whooo.....and we're going to catch our breath"- VL
"Come on guys....make your mind up."- BR, after the Refs were taking too much time to make a clock adjustment.
"Gray leading the Panthers with 14 points on the season"- DE, Read it again.
I'm pretty sure Raftery just called Bradshaw from Tennessee a Nooch.
I know I gave Verne and Bill the top grade earlier in the Tourney, but I think they are really understating the Ohio State comeback. I mean that was AMAZING, and it took absoultely no time. I'm a tad bit disappointed.
"He's dotted the I in Ohio State!" - Verne Lundquist, noticing the placement of a blood spot on Oden's jersey. (Raftery's unguarded giggling after this remark was priceless) - Extra P.
I also thought that Jay Bilas had the line of the night when talking about the SIU defense. He said at one point "This has got to be like sitting in the dentist's chair for Kansas!" Which is exactly the way it felt to be watching it as a fan. - Extra P.

Oh no.....mid-major giving Kansas a game. Let's see if they fold like a lawn chair again like the last two years
Heh heh, Dick Enberg said "doodie". Yes, I know it's childish, but still.
"The longer Southern Illinois has the ball, the longer Kansas has to play defense."
Gee, thanks for that insight Jay Bilas.
Bill Raftery: "...to keep you erect."
Have you noticed that the two courts in San Jose and San Antonio look exactly the same?
The San An crowd decidedly favors A&M. The Buckeyes are in trouble.
half of my final 4 is in action right now...and i'm worried
I wish I could chose which game to watch. I need to watch Acie Law and the Aggies. Though this has been pretty good also as SIU takes the lead! Let's go Salukis ruin' my buddy's bracket!
JB: "Free throws may be the easiest points they're going to get"
Gee, you think?
Non issue, but Dick Enberg suggested that Tatum should be getting A's in his African-American studies courses. For what reason? Ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, who knows.
I just took a crap. Two words to explain it? Long and athletic.
How many times is Greg Gumball going to call San Jose San Antonio?
He's done it at least four times so far.
Missed free throws notwithstanding, why would you foul when you're down two with over a minute to play?
Why not try for a defensive stop before potentially giving up two points?
Somebody needs to start a Summer Free Throw Camp. For the love of god, how can Mario Chalmers' 76% be the best percentage for Kansas? That's sickening!
well that was interesting
kansas missin free throws like a middle school team, and SIU havin a chance to win it at the end...if we were playing ABA ball
now if Texas A&M survives, my finals are safe
I had the aggies going to the final 4. Refs ripped them off!!!
Enberg just called Ryan Wright of UCLA Alfred Aboya three times in a row after Wright blocked a shot. Wright wears a head band, how hard can it be to distinguish the two?
it's a good thing CBS just reminded me that Tennessee is in orange, and Ohio St is in white.
Oh and sammie, which call are you talking about? The legitimate foul when the Aggies couldn't get 1 of 4 rebounds, or the clock adjustment? The refs didn't blow the game, the Aggies blew that game.
sammie, er... i mean mookie. as in mookie wilson. what a player he was!
The aggies blew it by not rebounding and The refs got the clock situation wrong.
i thought the refs made the right call. See http://awfulofficiating.blogspot.com/ for my take.
Glad to see Awful Officiating here. Looking forward to hearing how A&M's one bounce and out of bounds turned into 1.1 seconds.
They're almost making your job too easy.
Doh. Took too long writing my comment. The question is moot!
I agree. Even though I had A&M in this game (and going to the final four), if the Aggies really deserved to win that game, they should have been able to box out and get a defensive rebound.
Fucking A&M just destroyed my bracket.
I've been ahead in my office pool for the last two years after the first two rounds and have lost it on the second weekend.
i to have an open thread at www.ssreporters.blogspot.com.
To kick off it's 1st week put up on the web.
S2N - sucks doesn't it, but I guess that's why they call it Madness! Hey - look on the bright side, I was picking heavy on the upsets this year - so my bracket has been busted since last weekend. It's always hit or miss.
Wow...the refs actually had the call right. The ball hit in bounds and the clock doesn't stop until it hits someone out of bounds. Good call.
A big ol' "FUCK CBS" right now. UCLA is up by 12 on Pitt and they haven't switched over to the Tenn-OSU game. I know I'm in UCLA territory, but still.
MMOD only has a 30 second delay. I'm in Pitt territory, but I'm enjoying Raftery/Lundquist and the google boys in the truck free online.
MMOD just showed the "rejected! don't you bring that weak tot in here" commercial! I have to admit... I find that to be pretty humorous.
Oh - did anyone else see that Kobe scored 60 tonight!!! WOW! 3 straight 50 point games. Anyway - just felt like mentioning that. Back to the madness...
This is ridiculous. I guess the math doesn't quite work out, but it's almost better to foul Tennessee than to let them shoot 3's. 5 seconds to go and their 3pt% is 4 points higher than from the line...
so texas AM busted my bracket (national runners up) but i can still finish 2nd in my pool if i pick every game exactly right
get to witness some of the madness tomorrow in NJ, so hopefully georgetown can keep all of my final 4 teams alive
fun day of basketball
All four of those games were winners for my bracket tonight, so I'm happy. I did have a Memphis, Kansas, Tennessee moneyline parlay that would've netted me $75 if UT pulled it out. Oh, well.
I'm live blogging tonight...but I don't think I can provide the commentator quote goodness. Still, if you're interested...
