March Madness Day 1 Announcing Recap

Friday, March 16, 2007

So we're through the first day, and what have we learned?

About the Play by Play Guys:

1) James Brown might have a slight cold.
2) Kevin Harlan does not know a charge when he sees one.
3) Dick Enberg uses big words like Hemoglobin.
4) Gus Johnson likes to yell randomly.

About the Analysts:

1) Len Elmore is rarely excited.
2) Bob Wenzel is actually pretty good. No one's ever heard of him though.
3) Jay Bilas is the king of the double entendre.
4) Dan Bonner rarely gets a word in over the yelling.

But of course we already knew #4. To tell you the truth no one was overwhelming bad or good Day One. James Brown and Lenny Elmore were good but subdued. Gus Johnson could turn a ballet into a Gwar concert. Kevin Harlan makes a good amount of mistakes but is pretty solid overall and knows his stuff.

Really the only team I was annoyed with was Enberg-Bilas. They started out fine, but slowly spiraled downward until Bilas started spewing lines like this...."It's like your playing your dad in the driveway the way they get those 2nd chance points". I have no idea what that even means.

So without further ado I give you Day 1....in quotes......

-"They had a four hour mechanical with their aircraft"- Kevin Harlan
-"Louisville looks to advance if they can hang onto this one"- Gus Johnson, The Cardinals were up 26 with 2 minutes left.
-"He loves to take you back-door after the timeouts"- Jay Bilas
-"You'll find out why TV Guide calls Patrick Warrrrrrbarton hilarious"- Dick Enberg
-"It's like your playing your dad in the driveway the way they get those 2nd chance points"- Jay Bilas
-"We might be a couple of seconds as they wipe up the drops of hemoglobin"- Dick Enberg
-"Jones is their best stroker from deep"- Bob Wenzel
-"And our second player of the game is Carl Elliot with 8 points"- James Brown
-"Coach K saw what we did, Paulus needs a blow"- Bob Wenzel
-"There is Greg Paulus, he has met his banging quota for the night."- Bob Wenzel
-"Another limb has spawned from the coaching tree of Billy Donovan."- Len Elmore
-"Aaron Gray is a great player and a great academician."- Bob Wenzel

The highlight of the night though was by far and away the screen shot of which jerseys VCU and DUKE:

VCU- Black, DUKE- White

Of course they are....and you are RACISTS CBS! Go Rams!!!

See you tomorrow for Day 2! And you know who we get tomorrow right????

I actually really like the Enberg/Bilas duo... my favorite was when Enberg was doing the promo of for the soulmates story on the evening news in a "Am I really saying this?" voice... Enberg is the best.

Anybody see Acie Law III? Dude looks like Snoop's uncle. If Texas A&M makes the Final Four, I can't wait to see Acie's pops start crip walking at midcourt.

I completely disagree. I could listen to Bilas do color all day, while Bob Wenzel made it very hard to believe that VCU was not a #1 seed. I hate Duke, and he made me root for them. He was like the anti-Vitale, which may have its place in this crazy, mixed-up world, but not last night.
Did anyone catch his two mispronunciations of the word "eschew"? During the late afternoon game and the late night game, he said "Team X eskewes the zone for man-to-man d" or something like that. Can him. Replace Packer with Bilas.

That quote right there made for one of my favorite Day 1 moments.

how did you guys miss Gus Johnson and Dan Bonner talking about jerking off corn in the OSU game, referring to Matta's high school mascot.

Did I hear Enberg report "Duke has not lost in the first round in a couple of centuries"?

Nobody nows who Bob Wenzel is? Clearly his time spent destroying Rutgers basketball escapes the crowd. Oh the days of Donnell Lumpkin and Andre Lamoureaux. I shall now go kill myself

Tremendous. Here's a few other good ones:

"Ya hear that sound, JB? That's the bus warming up. Specifically, Gonzaga's bus." - Len Elmore

"HE LETS IT GO!!!" - Gus Johnson, reaching the utmost physical peak of his voice before the shot had left the BYU's player hand

"Not the most exciting day here in Lexington" - Gus Johnson, being more truthful than anyone had ever predicted he would be

"Ice water in his veins" - Bob Wetzel, said approximately 11 times throughout the Buffalo games

A memorable line from CBS and the trainwreck that is Gus Johnson.

"He drives to the hoop...NEW YORK STYLE!"

"Did I hear Enberg report "Duke has not lost in the first round in a couple of centuries"?"

Yep! I was hoping someone else noticed that. I think they put up the year as 1996 in the blurb, and as I did the math in my head to get 11 years, he blurts out "hasn't lost in the first round in a couple centuries", and I couldn't believe it. He meant to say a couple decades, but even that wouldn't have been right.

I'm not an avid fan of any team but is it considered okay for an announcer to favor a team as the two announcers did during the Louisville - Texas A&M game? I continued watching and hoped Texas would win as they did. What was that favoritism about?
