What's There To Say? Gibbs Just Doesn't Know What's Going On.

Sunday, December 02, 2007

With all of the Sean Taylor pieces this morning (Jimmy Johnson even cried during FOX's pregame) I was actually dreading the game today. That was until it got underway. Even though the Skins couldn't score TDs at all they were still in a position to win an ugly game.

That's when Gibbs happened and just like in the Giants game, the Packers game, the Eagles game, the Cowboys game, and the Bucs game....they failed in the end.

It's a depressing day for Skins fans but this just adds to the agony. I wrote a post last year around the same time of year saying how hard it is when you know your team doesn't have a shot at the Playoffs, but this year it's just magnified with all that's going on.

Like reader Alan wrote, wasn't there a better choice of words for Ian Eagle at the end there? "He is DEAD solid perfect." Good one Ian.

Great win for my Bills, but I cannot imagine what Redskins fans are going through right now. Most difficult sport's week in their lives probably.

Wow, I can't believe they lost. Gibbs is fired.

And....what's up with the announcing schedule? Kevin Harlan was supposed to call the game, it was Ian Eagle. Craig Bolerjack, not Greg Gumbel, is announcing the Browns/Cards with Dan Dierdorf.

Before the Browns-Cardinals game, Craig DrinkingJack said that Greg Gumbel "had the flu."
Don't know what happened to Harlan.

Do you really sit there and analyze every word that comes out of announcers mouths? Watching a game with you must be miserable.

I mean, yeah, I can see the point if they get stats wrong or if they pull a Summerall and call the Baltimore Ravens the Baltimore Colts through an entire game, or consistently get yardages wrong like Dick Stockton. But "dead"? You're upset about the word "dead"??

Football-wise: Jesus did the Gibbs blow that. I mean all you need is a first down so you bring in the super-jumbo package?? Why? And the there was the timeout...oh man.

anon, you suck. You obviously don't watch football.

I didn't say I was upset...announcers just need to think more about what they say.

Do you just sit around and comment on blogs all day? God, hanging out with you must be boring as hell.

Awful,
I just don't get the point in saying anything about it. Announcing, by its nature, is spontaneous. There's obviously preparation to do before hand but once the game kicks off its largely ad-lib. So Eagle said it was "dead solid perfect", so what? It wasn't intentional.

I like the general idea of what you do here, and I think it serves a purpose (whether or not media-types read this or not it gives fans a place to vent) but I just don't see the point in nitpicking about something like this.

Mookie - Thanks, that adds a lot.

Seems like an odd thing to say "I must be boring" in one comment then "I generally like what you do" in the next. Not that I care either way, but which is it?

It was an unfortunate thing to say...did I rake him through the coals for it? No. He just wasn't thinking and I was just making note of it.

@Anon 7:08:

If you notice, most of what PbPers say isn't spontaneous (see Jim Nantz around Final Four time).
I've only seen a few games of Eye-an Eagle's, but I think 'dead solid perfect' is a standby of his on GW kicks.
With all of what's going on with the people watching the broadcast (especially locally in the DC area), he could've chosen something else to say.
I guess you have no problem with Mike Patrick saying that LSU 'killed Virginia Tech,' either.

"Seems like an odd thing to say "I must be boring" in one comment then "I generally like what you do" in the next. Not that I care either way, but which is it?"

I said "generally", meaning "Most of the time I like what you do". Besides, the two concepts are not mutually exclusive.

Rick:
No, why would I? I don't see the point in adding a deeper meaning to someones words when there is no reason to.

I found it interesting that Fox's OT show didn't mention anything about Gibbs and the time outs when they showed the highlights. They just showed the winning field goal.

You'd think they'd mention something as important as that.

Some quotes I heard from announcers around the league today that I thought Awful would be interested in.

"That was a terrible play by the silver and BLACK."-Overtly racist comment.

"This Cleveland/Arizona game has been a WAR today."-Pro Iraq War statement.

"The Atlanta defense looks TAXED right now."-Fiscally irresponsible Democrat supports increased taxation.

"False start by the Seahawks and the play is blown DEAD."-Insensitive announcer obviously mocking Sean Taylor's death.

Hey Awful, I thought of something else these insensitive announcers did today.

Fox has an analyst named Terry BradSHAW.

There was a movie called the SHAWshank redemption.

In this movie there is a scene where two people are shot from close range inside their home.

Couldn't that insensitive prick BradSHAW have changed his name or something before this weekend's games?

Check this out dude...

Ian Eagle's initials are IE.

I is the 9th letter in the alphabet.

E is the 5th letter in the alphabet.

A touchdown/extra point= 7.

9+5+7=21
