NFL Open Thread - Week 8 Late Games

Sunday, October 26, 2008

Highlights from the earlies:

  • Brett Favre is having fun out there, throwing 3 picks today and the Jets defense has made Tyler Thigpen look like a competent QB, as he's thrown for two TDs. 24-21, KC, but the Jets are driving right now -- whoops, Jets TD, 28-24, 45 seconds to go.
  • Philly has the game in hand with Atlanta in town, 20-7 right now. Matt Ryan has thrown two picks, Donovan McNabb and Brian Westbrook have both rushed for scores.
  • Rams acquitting themselves well at Gillette. Patriots are up by 7, Marc Bulger's leading a drive right now. Two picks for Matt Cassel haven't helped, and the Pats have stalled at times.
  • Shootout in London! 37-30, Saints, with about 7:30 to go. Chargers just scored, most of the day has made a mockery of the concept of defense. Drew Brees hasn't been sacked all day and has already thrown for 322 yards.
  • Redskins ahead by 8 now, they were actually down to the Lions until Santana Moss returned a punt to the house.
  • Miami up 25-16 on Buffalo thanks to Trent Edwards suffering from two cases of fumbleitis and throwing a pick.
  • Tampa Bay driving with 29 seconds left in the game and down 4 points in Dallas, 13-9. A Brad Johnson TD pass put the Boys in the lead....and the Bucs stall in the red zone on 4th down; Dallas holds on.
  • Carolina's got the ball and is hanging on to a 4-point lead.
  • Oakland, as is their wont, is making Baltimore look good offensively. 29-10, Ravens.
Your late games are:

Fox:

NY Giants at Pittsburgh - Dick Stockton, Troy Aikman
Seattle at San Francisco - Ron Pitts, Tony Boselli

CBS:

Cleveland at Jacksonville - Dick Enberg, Randy Cross
Cincinnati at Houston - Gus Johnson, Steve Tasker

I hope you're not one of those people stuck without Giants-Steelers. Feel free to be angry in the comments if you are and wanted to see the best game.

No joke, the Seahawks are winning.....

And JT O'Sullivan fumbled on the 3rd play of the game.

Randy Cross after a fantasy fb promo:" I was on with the fantasy guys this morning"

Enberg: "What were you fantasizing about?"

I would like to take this opportunity to give the CBS the ol' middle finger. For whatever reason, they CUT AWAY from the end of the Chargers-Saints game to show highlights. I wasn't originally with that game (I had the Chiefs and the Bretts), but after the Chiefs-Jest, CBS flipped to the London game and then with 2 minutes left and the Chargers driving to tie, they cut away. Unfuckingbelieveable. So to CBS and the nitwit whose idea it was to not let people watch the end of a good game, I do say "fuck you."

AZ blew that game in more ways than one. A botched fake field goal at the end of the first half, a missed extra point, a red zone INT by Warner, and an unsuccessful challenge on a Carolina TD. Oh, and the most rushing yards was an end around by Boldin for 30 yards. They just cannot win on the road, dammit.

Jfein,

CBS Can't show Bonus Coverage of a game past 4:15pm est because FOX has the doubleheader game today.

It's a stupid NFL rule, but their argument is that is takes viewers away from FOX's games.

I think that today illustrated the stupidness of that rule.

"Already two challenges, pretty close to one another." - Dick Stockton who could have just said that they were on back-to-back plays.

Stupid challenge by New York. This has absolutely no chance of being overturned.

Watch that wasted challenge by Coughlin come back to bite him when he really needs one.

@ S2N: Similar thing happened to Atlanta today. They wasted a timeout after a defensive stop with a little over 2 miniutes left. The Eagles' punt was "muffed" by the Falcons and recovered by Philly. Of course, it was not touched at all, but the Dirty Birds had just called their last timeout and the clock was over 2 minutes so there was nothing they could do.

The officials in this Giants-Steelers game are horrible. They clearly have no clue what the "defenseless receiver" rule is all about, and now they've just called a penalty on "18 of the offense," when it was clearly 81. Also this game is just full of huge hits. These two teams are just teeing off on one another.

I'm stuck with Seattle-San Francisco. I live in Reno, which while technically regional for the Niners, is NOT home market. This is bullshit.

anon - so sorry. My stations were set to carry both crappy Bay Area teams (I live about three hours from SF), but they opted to switch. Would that every regional have done the same.

Pam Oliver forgot what she was going to say in her sideline report about the Giants offense:

"That's a senior moment right there." - Aikman
"She's not old enough to have one of those." - Stockton
"She's on her way there." - Aikman

Ouch. Everyone was laughing, though.

Wow, Pam Oliver just totally forgot what she was reporting, she said "Tom Coughlin said... I forgot, I'll have to get back to you, oh good lord."

When did the Giants sign Roy Williams? I'm not sure the Butler could've done a worse job defending that play. Ye gods.

Thanks, STN. So freaking tired of Niner and Raiders. If I wasn't so broke, I'd go to the bar.

And really, with satellite, these ancient TV rules need to go out the window.

Thanks for letting me vent. I bookmarked this site. :-)

Hey Steelers D;

You play a 10yd zone on 3rd and 7 in the 4th qtr of a tie game, and then let a receiver get wide open in the end zone ?

That's Gregg(the extra g is for genius) Williams brilliance there

What the Giants just did to the Steelers at the end of the game is a great argument against using a prevent defense.

Yes, the prevent defense.

Sing along with me: "The prevent defense prevents you from winning the game."

Dick LeBeau is an aggressive D-coordinator. What the fuck is he doing using the prevent after nearly four quarters of up-front D?

I believe in the beginning of the Giants-Steelers game, I heard Dick stockton say 'San Antonio Holmes' referring to Nate Washington starting in his place. He enunciated that way, so thats what I heard, and I rewound it, and put CC on, and sure enough, thats what they put too.
