The Shockers Are Little Monkeys

Monday, January 22, 2007

It's an ESPNU kind of day. While searching for some Simmons outtakes I came across this video of analyst Bucky Waters calling the Wichita State Shockers "little monkeys". It's hard to believe that people would even attempt to try to make this anaology (ahem Anita Marks), but announcer after announcer seems to try it. And every time it comes off as awkward and not clever....especially when the Shockers have three African-American players on the court at the time....

Maybe he's like Stephen Colbert and didn't realize that they were African Americans.

Oh come on, let's cut him some slack, I'm sure he meant it in the most racist way possible.

"...and by "monkeys", I mean shifty negroes!"

I don't think it meant anything rascist, he was clearly giving the Shockers a big compliment, but used the wrong words to describe how good their game was.

Well, of course he used the wrong word. Monkeys have tails. The Shockers are sans tails, so they must be apes.
