Familar Faces In New Places: More Sportswriting News

Thursday, August 16, 2007

These only come out when there's nothing to talk about, so you tell what kind of day it's going to be here at AA (Caption, video, video for those keeping score). I found this interesting though....FOX Sports is counteracting ESPN's recent signings with some of their own....

Jason Whitlock has left AOL after 11 months and will be penning/typing a column over at FOX now. His first one is up and is a response of sorts to Michael Wilbon's column on racism at his alma mater (Ball State). The article is everything you'd expect it to be as J-Whit lays down the law in his first article back on FOX Sports. First rule of Real Talk.....You Don't Talk About Reel Talk.....

1. Real Talk is a must-read for any hardcore football fan. No one in America writes more provocatively and intelligently about football than yours truly. Football is in my blood.

2. If you have a closed mind or agenda when it comes to American race issues, you will not like Real Talk. I love to write about race. It's a pervasive issue in the sports world and should not be ignored. My opinions on racial matters are unpredictable. Black or white, liberal or conservative, you should leave your expectations at the door. I'll disappoint you.

3. The AOL version of Real Talk gained national notoriety when I exposed NBA All-Star Weekend in Las Vegas for being the gangsta paradise, Black KKK rally that it was. Real Talk became a world-wide playa when I dissed Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson and Vivian Stringer for turning Don Imus' inappropriate attempt at humor into a national pity party/recruiting video/marketing tool for their individual cause$.

So it only makes sense to start Real Talk's resurrection from exactly where it left off.

Okay, so what about Ronny Thompson and Ball State then???

I'm sorry, I don't have much sympathy for Ronny Thompson. You don't quit and cry and beg friends in the media to savage the reputation of people you know bent over backwards trying to help you — especially when you know damn well your own actions greatly contributed to your demise.

You don't buckle in 15 months. You stand and fight.

Well then. Thanks for playing Wilbon. I don't think there's a more honest and hard hitting writer than Whitlock out there. If you know of one let me know (and Norman Chad is great, but I wouldn't call him hard hitting).

P.S.- FOX also added some guy I've never heard of as well to cover the NFL and MMA.....Alex Marvez from Florida.

We're back ... and just in time (FOX Sports)

How can you not know Alex Marvez? The guy has great photos. Look at him rocking a mullet: http://www.kennyandbo.com/photos/lrg_P1000113.JPG
and here:http://www.phinatics.com/dougswebimages/sta32alexmarvez.jpg

The best photo is at wrestingobserver.com. It looks either like a senior-year high school photo or he's saying, "The joke's on you asshole."

Oh, and he's a pretty good writer too.

Whitlock is great! He deserves major exposure. He's a writer and he'll write the truth, unlike a lot of these writers on TV who won't dare criticize truthfully because they're afraid they'll get iced out by the people they cover and lose their cushy positions. Do your job, people (Wilbon).

Good luck, Jason!

I must be one of the few who finds Whitlock a self-important, aggrandizing hack. Sure, he says shit no one else will; it doesn't mean he's right -- and when he goes off on hip-hop as the main problem with black society, he reveals himself to be just a bit ignorant (and hypocritical; he hates the misogyny in hip-hop, yet frequents strip clubs and produces rap acts in KC.)

It takes a lot of ego to write that no one is a better writer about football than you are, and it's ego he doesn't deserve. He's a fat-assed version of Skip Bayless.

Marvez is/was the President of the Pro Football Association.

He's covered the Bengals, Broncos and Dolphins in the past.

and writes a rasslin' column too.

I actually saw Ball State play live this past year and that was the blackest team I'd seen since Thompson Senior's G'Town teams.

Not that there's anything wrong with that. Just an observation.

Whitlock is definitely provocative. Anybody who ticks off Mike Lupica is okay with me.
