Monday Night Football Review: Preseason Game #4

Tuesday, August 28, 2007

I'd love to tell you that I stuck it out for the sake of the site, but that's not the case. The moment I saw Chris Mortensen (while being interviewed by Michele Tafoya) talk over an amazing touchdown by Jerious Norwood (1:50 Mark), I started watching Enemy of the State on cable.

The Vick coverage started yesterday at 9am and didn't end until almost midnight. You knew it was coming (hell the producers even told us ahead of time), but I would have really loved to have watched some Football last night. They so could have wrapped up all the discussion at halftime and just moved on.

I think Sean Pendergast (during my spot on 1560AM in Houston last evening) summed it up best. The only people staying up that late to watch the 2nd Half of Monday Night Football are hardcore Football Fans (and probably high stakes gamblers). Times that by 20 for the preseason. The only people watching the 2nd half of that game are people who want to trash MNF, degenerate gamblers, guys trying to decide who their 12th round fantasy pick is, and insomniacs.

Everything was just too much last night. The legal analyst, Mort, the African-American lady that Suzy Kolber interviewed for 14 minutes, Tony getting mad because Chad Johnson didn't celebrate a TD in the preseaon, etc, etc. It never ended. The only highlight for me was when Tony Kornheiser took Bobby Petrino to task for not allowing media to ask his former teammates questions regarding the quarterback. It's the first time I've agreed with Tony in awhile. This is what you are good at....not those cheesy jokes. Keep this up.....

"That may work for him as a new coach, but these guys were his teammates, some of them for many years. And to deprive them a chance to see his first step in rehabilitation, I would have gone the other way on that."- TK

ESPN has set MNF up to fail, but again....we already knew that. And can we please get rid of the term "Dress Rehearsal"? Any game that has a TD from Ovie Mughelli is not a "Dress Rehearsal"....it's a crappy preseason game.

Don't forget that VickCenter had two black anchors last night who "informed" us that they thought that Vick's "apology" was sincere and heartfelt.

And the Yankees lost 16-0 last night, and it wasn't the top story. ESPN must really think that this is a big deal. A Yankees loss like that would usually warrant ESPN's usual "end of the world" coverage from about two dozen different so-called experts.

Great call on the Yankees and "Idiot's Picnic" is hilarious. If you stay around until Noon today....SportsCenter and 1st Take are getting their own post.

My favorite was just after they ran through the Bengals starting offense and TK saying, "That's a lot of Johnsons."

I hope I never get so old that I stop laughing at stupid shit like that.

1. The African-American lady was Cynthia Tucker, an editor at the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that did a pretty good job conveying the sentiments of the city.

2. The coverage was completely overdone on MNF, they shoudl have relegated it to halftime and left it at that.

Why do they have two sideline reporters and why aren't they doing sideline reporting, but interviewing people in a LOUD STADIUM?

They can't possibly call themselves professionals. That is some lousy shit.

Keyshawn == supposebly

Nice. Isn't Robert Smith available? He's black, pretty damn smart, and can be controversial.

He is probably too smart for that crew. Can't ask too many questions about how things are run. Like Jaws and Korny engaging in a five minute long, 3rd grade giggling fit and have to be shut down by Tirico.

It is amazing they can put this dreck on the tube with such unwavering attitude.

I might really throw a brick at a tv this year. I don't own a tv, so I'll have to find one.

how about how Wilbon's good friend David Cornell has become ESPN's new goto guy about legal stuff? Is it because he used to work for the NFL and is now an agent or .... somethig more obvious?

- It was actually a decent game for the first half, but you'd never know it. ESPN of course KILLED the game.

- Glad to see Suzy Kolber got that exclusive interview with Mortenson...how'd she pull that off? And Mort talked all the way through a great drive by Atlanta for a TD.

- I fell over when Jaws actually disagreed with TK and said the Falcons didn't have to talk about Vick just to give writers a story. TK actually thinks the most important thing is for the players to give him quotes!! Jaws said they should be focused on playing football. Wow! Common sense on ESPN?

I watch the second half because the show is such a train wreck that I can't stop watching. Embarrassing!

That was the perfect example of announcers forgetting that they are not the stars. Verbal vomiting for three+ hours. What about the GAME?
