Why The Hell Is Colin Cowherd In The Booth This Friday Night?

Tuesday, August 28, 2007

It's a valid question isn't it? Why in the world would ESPN add Shrutebag to a three-man team to make it an unheard of four-man broadcast? It's such a dumb move that it's beyond my comprehension. Here are a few reasons that I could come up with. Help me in figuring this out by adding one in the comments....

1. Colin's radio show is getting terrible ratings. They put him on one of the first College games of the year to hype his show. This seems the most plausible, especially since the press release read like this, "ESPN Radio’s Colin Cowherd of The Herd with Colin Cowherd will provide commentary from the booth of ESPN’s Washington at Syracuse telecast Friday, Aug. 31 at 8 p.m." (FYI- I know nothing about his ratings, so that may or may not be the case)

2. DNS Server attacks cost money in lawyer fees. He has to make a few extra bucks.

3. ESPN couldn't think up a worse punishment for Sean McDonough, Rob Stone, and Chris Spielman.

4. He was jealous that Bill Simmons got to call a game.

5. He has some free time on his hands.

6. He needs some more information for that game show thingy he was doing. Oh wait....that was canceled. Nevermind.

7. He's jealous of Olbermann's new role on NBC.

8. He needs a new forum to show off his magic skills.

9. They put him in Syracuse to get him as far away from Cincinnati as they can.

10. He needs to pass the time until the next Radio ESPY Awards Ceremony.

Sorry I might have taken them all....if you have one to add feel free to add it in the comments. And Shrutey......I'll (We'll) be watching. Don't F up.

8 p.m.- ESPN /ESPN Mobile TV- Washington at Syracuse

Sean McDonough, Chris Spielman, Colin Cowherd and Rob Stone

I know they tried to shoehorn him into the ESPN Radio College Gameday show.

Hey, another show that won't be the same this year, with Revson and DiNardo moved on to the Big11Ten Channel.

I would imagine Stoner (to borrow a Simmonsism) would be a sideline reporter, not in the booth, which would make it far from unprecedented.

He mentioned yesterday morning that the WWL was planning on putting his show on TV sometime in the near future(supposedly the main reason he moved into M & M's old studio). We'll see... it seems every time he "promotes" something like that, it ends up in the crapper.
On btw... when talking about his foray into the booth, he compared himself to, get this, Dennis Miller.

The only reason I can think of is that ESPN is trying to reach a deal with the Rainbow Coalition and they hope this gets them over the top.

I hate Cowherd so much that I would send an email to Visio and tell them that the reason I won't buy one of their TVs is that they have him as a spokesman.

Think Speilman would kick the shit out of him for some beer money or a case of Genee Cream?

I do.

What else would you expect from a network that thinks it's newsworthy that Tiger Woods rang the bell at the NYSE and Tom Brady's child's initials are JET?

Agreed. Who cares? It's a nothing game. Not like they're putting him in the booth for a real game.

You guys don't think throwing a random ESPN Radio personality into a primetime game isn't a big deal?

Really???

Aug 29, 2007, 2:02:00 AM

Yeah but it's Washington vs. Syracuse. Who the hell is really going to watch that game besides gamblers and fanatics just dying to see some sort of football on TV?

Aug 29, 2007, 10:46:00 AM

I'll be watching it as a syracuse alum..anyway. Stone is on the sideline so its not a 4 man booth. I think its a big deal because its the opening weekend of college football and a lot of people will watch before they go out on friday..

I agree with you. I think it's a big deal. I always think it's funny how ESPN always picks up Syracuse's first few home games. That way, all of ESPN's anchors, reporters, writers and producers can see how bad their alma mater is and wish it was basketball season.

Great Great Point anon 12:18. Also, I didn't mean 4-man booth which is why I said 4-man team. Sorry if that was confusing.

I'm pretty sure a ton of people are going to watch the game. I mean it's the first CFB weekend of the year...you're telling me you're not watching?

Come on...it's Cowherd...it's the Huskies...it's The Orange...

IT'S FRIDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL LIVE FROM THE CARRIER DOME!!!!

What's wrong with The Herd as an announcer? His passion is college football, at least he admits the sports is popular because of gambling...

It’s not going to be a four-man broadcast, get your facts together…

Anon- When there are 3 people in the booth and 1 sideline reporter you add those up and you get a 4-man Broadcast Team. Sort of how Michele Tafoya is considered part of the MNF team.

I know math is hard, but try and keep up.

"The Herd" is great radio he does not break down games like other boring sports radio talk hosts..he is great to listen to and I enjoy his show. Ya so he is doing the broadcast what;s the big deal good for him he is getting paid to do a fun easy job while you sorry loosers are here wasting your time commenting on him. guess what he dosent care what you think, he dosnet care what I think that;s why I dont waste my time like you fools and just enjoy his show...get out of your parents basement get a hair cut and stop making out with your arm and get a job then you wont have time to comment on someone who has a job and is making money.
