Joe Buck To Receive Improbable Award

Monday, August 13, 2007

Don't know how I missed this at the end of July, but Joe Buck is receiving an award. The award is apparently given for the person the Press Club of St. Louis thinks is the National Media Member of the year. Oh, and it's named after his father (didn't see that one coming)....

"When naming the award to honor the late sports broadcasting icon Jack Buck, the Press Club knew the natural choice for the first recipient was Joe -- for his own pre-eminence in the world of broadcasting and for his many outstanding contributions to media excellence," Alice Handelman, president of the Press Club, said in a statement.
I don't know how he could have possibly won this award. The word pre-eminence and Joe Buck are like associating "stable" and "Lindsay Lohan". Good news is that Tim McCarver will be giving a speech about Buck at the event. This will ultimately allow Buck's smugness to be ignored again as everyone will be trying to decipher Tim McCarver's words.

"Talking is a very important aspect as far as announcing is concerned."

Any time I hear/read someone praising Joe Buck, I feel like I'm in some sort of Bizarro World.

Which, oddly enough, is the name for Joe Buck's entire career. It was originally going to be called the Chip Caray Award.

McCarver's speech will start with the obligatory "Back in the 60's I was playing for the Cardinals..."
