Selection Sunday Open Thread

Sunday, March 16, 2008

I've been keep track of the Championship quotes all week and to all of you that have emailed some in I thank you. That's going to be tomorrow's first post and it'll definitely be worth a look see. As for today, I'm going to use this space to talk about the Championship games and then the Selection Shows later on this evening. There will be quotes, vids, and your comments.

If you're around feel free to chime in and I hope all of your teams make it in this fine Sunday (even though mine isn't going to). First video of the day via Yahoo is this clip of Mike Patrick's adulation of all things Hansbrough and the ACC....

Tyler Hansbrough has a secret admirer. Okay, it's Mike Patrick (Yahoo Sports)

I really don't know how he still has a job. How can you say it was a good play for a player to NOT get a rebound?! That just doesn't make sense.

Please tell me someone else just heard Dick Vitale start a story by saying' "My wife was on her knees earlier today..." (Via Hanrahan)

I wish I could get the ESPN feed right now. I still say those two should be banned from ever calling an ACC game ever again.

Post a clip of Hansbrough's post-buzzer beater celebration. He looked like the "special kid" who had just made his first ever shot in gym class. (Via Steve B)

As you wish....1 minute mark for those who missed it. So goofy....

Oh and while we're at it, here are my last four in and last four out. Feel free to share yours in the comments....

In: St. Joes, Virginia Tech, South Alabama, Villanova
Out: VCU, Illinois State, Ohio State, Arizona

"He throws it off the shin guards......I remember when I was a player, I got down and laid sideways because I didn't want to be a soprano."- Bucky Waters on getting the ball thrown at him as someone is jumping out of bounds.

"Ogelsby and Riversby are three point shooters."- Mike Gminski

Pretty sure Gminski is just putting By's on the end of everyone's names at this point. Rebound by Tyler Hansbroughby! UNC is trying to lose this game too. Here comes and Ogelsbyby three.

"This is the magic that is March Madness. You get the Goliaths against the big guys." - Dick Vitale (Via Hanrahan)

"Arkansas and Georgia for the birth to the NCAA Championship."- Verne Lundquist

Good to have you back Verne. This also just looks weird with the ESPN crawl at the bottom, but good for them at least getting the game on TV....

Am I the only one that wants to see Georiga in the tourney and Kentucky get the boot? (Via Nelvis)

I don't think you're alone in that regard. I guess the only good thing about the boring ass Big Ten Championship and the SEC Championship is that the committee has to wait around to see if either team wins.

"Can it be they've weathered the storm?"- Verne Lundquist

So so bad. It looks like Kansas is getting the one seed, so I guess that leaves Tennessee, Wisconsin, Duke, and Texas as 2's most likely. Is anyone in the Country watching that Big 10 game? Bad move by CBS not carrying the SEC game on their network if you ask me.

I am stuck at work today, watching Yahoo! GameChannel. I will cry soon, though perhaps it's a blessing because I don't have to watch the really shoddy Raycom coverage of the ACC Tournament.

Mike Gminski is actually pretty good, but the play-by-play guys they've used and halftime host Jason Capel are literally atrocious.

Unrelatedly, Yesterday the second half of Duke-Clemson got preempted for 40 minutes for tornado coverage that was 250 miles away from me. Some of the tornadoes were not in the same state as me. This should be illegal.

It is impossible for Hansbrough not to look like an idiot, though. For the record I am a UNC grad.

Now that the UNC-Clemson game is getting to be overwith, I preemptively nominate Wayne Ellington as MVP of the ACC Tournament. He has had an excellent tourney, and he was the most important clutch performer yesterday with those 8 straight points. Good rebounder this week, too.

I also predict that he will not win this award, not if Mike Patrick has anything to say about it.

If I was an Ohio State fan, I'd be pissed that CBS decided to fill 2 hours with last years' National Championship game the same day the Buckeyes will get shut out of the Big Dance.

Non college basketball related: You've gotta see the highlight of Jason Maxiell blocking Tyson Chandler a half an inch away from the basket in the first half. Top notch.

I'm wondering why CBS & its newly rebranded CBS College Sports didn't pull a power play and get the SEC Championship on their air instead of ESPN2.

Mar 16, 2008, 3:46:00 PM

Watching the SEC championship game is a little surreal. I dont know if it is the ACC in the middle of the foul lane or the CBS score box just above the ESPN2 ticker.

But nice work by CBS and ESPN to find a place to show the game.

AA, that Lil Mama song was at the start of the SEC Raycom broadcasts too.

Did not realize that the ESPN2 coverage of the SEC championship would be an actual CBS feed.

I wasn't thinking it would be ESPN, but did expect they'd use Raycom graphics since they're a partner in the ESPN Plus/ESPN 360 world.

Big Ten scores sound more like high school girls basketball. I hope "the committee" puts in as few Big Ten schools as possible. Not only are they bad, they are anti-entertaining (kinda like Joe Buck).

Mal said...

Yeah, Patrick and Vitale, slangin the ACC's D since '85. They've been horrible throughout the whole tourney. During the semifinals I don't know how many times Patrick said, "What a great game" or "Is this good or what?" or my personal favorite, "Just another lousy day at the ACC Tournament". Its like, just shut up and call the game. We know it's been a good game, you don't need to keep stating it over and over, and getting Dick all worked up. Patrick is such a hack.

Anonymous said...
Mar 16, 2008, 4:04:00 PM

I personally think Patrick is terrible, but I think the rest of America wouldn't mind him so much if didn't call EVERY ACC game.

Mar 16, 2008, 4:13:00 PM

@Mal: "as few Big Ten teams as possible" basically means that Illinois loses, and then leaving Ohio State off the bubble. That definitely seems possible.

One thing that Big Ten schools *do* have is tons of fan support nationwide, for every team, so the business side of having Big Ten schools at first- and second-round sites makes sense. I don't know if the committee is technically allowed to consider that, though.

Steve B. said...

Mike Patrick lives at Cameron Indoor, so having him call every Duke/ACC games cuts down on ESPN's travel expenses.

29-22 isn't THAT bad. Anyone remember the halftime score of Wisconsin vs. Southwest Missouri State in like the 1999 tourney? I think it was 15-11 or 18-10 or something.

If I owned CBS & the sinking ship that was CSTV and is now CBS Sports TV, I would've tried to get the game on there at 3:30 and get some more visibility for a channel no one watches, especially if they would use the CBS feed & studio show and commercials. I'm glad it's on ESPN2, otherwise I would've missed Verne Lundquist call Dennis Felton Dennis "Fulton" about three times. Good God.

The best thing about watching a Wisconsin game is how you get to hear people say "Stiemsma" and "Krabbenhoft" a lot. Those are really funny names.

Incidentally, notice how announcers think white guys are always hustling, hard-working players and black guys are always talented and gifted? It's probably at its worst with Hansbrough, who is apparently a hardworking player but also has a ridiculous athletic build and body. If he were black they'd be talking about what a specimen he is.

I have to watch Yahoo GameChannel, which is really funny.

There are a few kinds of shots. Most are classified as 3-pointers, jumpers, and "layups." When they show what happens, it often says things like "Billy Humphrey misses a layup." I'm guessing this isn't what we traditionally think of as a layup, but it really makes players look bad.

I feel like Georgetown's getting a 2 and Duke's getting a 3. It will be a bad decision if it's true, though I can't imagine ANYONE really wants Georgetown in their bracket.

Weakest possible bracket by potential seed:
1. Memphis
2. Wisconsin
3. Xavier
4. Drake
5. Butler
6. Texas A&M
7. Washington St.
8. UNLV
9. Davidson
10. St. Mary's
11. Temple
12. Western Kentucky
13. Siena
14. Cal State Fullerton
15. Maryland Baltimore County
16. Opening Round Game

Georgia is a 16, but they won't be due to the committee's convenience.

RJBO - Coppins was guaranteed a spot, hence they aren't the last team in. MSM was the last at-large taken, evidenced by their trip to Dayton.

About Raycom v. ESPN for people in ACC territory: Personally, I think the ACC finals and possibly semifinals should be on broadcast nationally, whether on CBS, ABC or somewhere else. Say what you will about ESPN's ACC love, it is consistently the #1 or #2 conference in the country in the RPI and deserves to be seen by people without cable a lot more than the Big1T1en.
