NFL Open Thread - Week 6 Late Games

Sunday, October 12, 2008

Tony Romo is going to sing us into the late slate of games, and don't forget about tonight's Patriots-Chargers live blog. Here are the games:

Fox:

Dallas @ Arizona - Dick Stockton, Troy Aikman
Philadelphia @ San Francisco - Sam Rosen, Tim Ryan
Green Bay @ Seattle - Chris Rose, J.C. Pearson

CBS:

Jacksonville at Denver - Greg Gumbel, Dan Dierdorf

Things we've learned from the early slate:

  • The Falcons stepped up -- they were up 9 on Chicago and stuffed the Bears on an important 4th and 1 at the goal line, but everybody's favorite Neckbeard ran the two minute drill to perfection and bombed it to Rashied Davis in the back of the end-zone for a go-ahead TD. Kyle Orton won this game for the Bears, if the lead holds up -- but it doesn't. Matt Ryan heaved a prayer to Michael Jenkins at the 33, he got out of bounds with a second left -- and Jason Elam hit a 48 yard FG to win the game.
  • Jake Delhomme was too good to be true earlier this season. He's got three picks and Jeff Garcia is playing out of his mind with Tampa up big.
  • Despite some reliable picks from the Gunslinger, the Bengals look headed to 0-6 in the Meadowlands.
  • Washington was losing to St. Louis by 6. That's right; the winless Rams were beating the Skins thanks to turnovers until rather recently. Zorn and Co. are up by 1...and they blow it. Field goal from Josh Brown gets the Rams their first win, 19-17.
  • Peyton Manning and Drew Brees opened pony kegs of whoopass on the Ravens and Raiders, respectively.
  • Houston is trying to scrap out its first win on the season, up by 2 with about 2 minutes to go -- but Miami has the ball -- and they've scored, but the Texans have the lead back again 29-28.
  • Detroit was somehow beating Minnesota 10-9 and I bet everyone in the Metrodome had a pitchfork waiting for Brad Childress' head if that held up -- but the Vikings got another field goal and pulled out a win.
OK. Let's have it out over the late games, and as usual, provide quotes.

I'm not listening. I have that game on TV, but I'm watching Jags-Broncos on the computer.

@ S2N: By not listening, you're only missing awful announcing..

J.T. O'Sullivan is having his 6th start as a starting QB". - Tim Ryan

As opposed to all those starts he had as a back-up QB?

Yeah, but my team is on.

"He's facing an off-the-field problem, but this is the first year where Matt Jones is really understanding his role on the team." - Dan Dierdorf.

Ummm....granted he was talking about Nedney who is playing injured, but still.

This has nothing to do with announcing and everything to do with me being a happy Eagles fan but Hank Baskett has made 3 incredible leaping catches. The biscuit has gone in the Baskett this afternoon...

Is anyone else watching this Seahawks/Packers game? JC Pearson just went from "World's Whitest Black Guy" to try to get fresh on Gary Payton.

It was like the episode of Fresh Prince when Carlton tried to be a brotha.

as depressing as that Redskin game was for me since I'm a Redskins fan, I hope at least Dallas loses, and so far they've been getting away with a whole bunch of BS fumbles that the refs gave Dallas breaks on. Right now Arizona should be winning this game 21-0 instead of 7-0

This is me, laughing at the Eagles for allowing the Niners to block an FG and take it to the house just before halftime.

Oh, and the Niners start the second half with the ball, too.

@ S2N: Don't get too excited. The Eagles have dominated the game and have been able to move the ball up and down the field at will. Akers needs to get out of his 45+ yd slump though. He's killing us.

"This is a point where the Denver defense needs to arch their back and get a stop." - Dierdorf, as the Jags are driving at the Denver 25.

(Garrard throws a TD pass to Marcedes Lewis to make it 24-10.)

"Well, forget about that arch." - Dierdorf.

Stockton: Talking about what Pam was saying, about Whisenhunt talking about not shooting themselves in the foot, they haven't stopped.

Aikman: And eventually, Whisenhunt is just going to start shooting people, period.

Hey AA --

Around the 5:00 min mark/3rd qtr after the review of Fitzgerald's TD catch that was ruled out of bounds in the Cardinals-Cowboys, Stockton said something about "Coming out of the hood" .. then said "You know what I mean" ..check it out..I only caught the last bit..but it sounded kind of funny..

Yeah, in relation to coming out of the hooded replay machine... I couldn't decide if he thought he had made a reference to the Ku Klux Klan hood, or the 'hood hood. Either way, it was pretty hilarious.

Rosen and Ryan are really kissing McNabb's ass. I'm an Eagles fan and all, but it's kind of pathetic how they are incessantly trying to prove that the interception wasn't McNabb's fault.

I almost just died I laughed so hard... this was the exact Stockton quote.

Dick Stockton: "Pete Marrelli has come out from the hood... I uh... I mean of course the hood to see the play... Not to use any, uh..."
Troy Aikman: "Yeah ok"
Dick Stockton: "Uh, you know what I mean."

Man, I'm sure Aikman can't wait for the baseball playoffs to be over so Joe Buck is back.

Stockton just claimed that that was Breaston's "first NFL touchdown."

I knew that wasn't true, I had him on a fantasy team last year (weird league, long story). But he had a return TD last season.

And no correction while talking about the kid after the break.

What a great day. The Redskins lose to the Rams (HA!), the Cowboys lose to the Cardinals (HA!), and the Eagles beat the 49ers (YES!). The only thing that can possibly make this day better is if the Phils can beat the Dodgers.

I'm not a Cards fan, but they got hosed all game by Dallas and the refs, and glad they were still able to win in OT

Mark B said...
Oct 12, 2008, 7:49:00 PM

Yeah I am continually amazed at NFL announcers not being aware of anything going on. There were whistles well before the snap on the field goal, and clearly Folk let up and the kick got blocked.

Sudi said...

Stockton/Aikman were one-sided for Dallas the way Summerall/Madden used to be.

In any event Cowboys-Cards was an instant classic.

Forget the exact quote but Aikman on Barber's 4th quarter TD had this to say about the Cardinals defense..

"The Cardinals players continuously continued to have good angles to tackle him"

Anonymous said...
Oct 12, 2008, 8:33:00 PM

I heard that too Anon... it was present tense, "continuously continue to..."

And I wish I could have rewound (no Tivo for me) on that blown dead/blocked FG try at the end of regulation. I could have sworn I heard Stockton say, "And the game is tied."

I am a Cardinals, somewhat(I hate Bill Bidwill with the intensity of 1000 suns, but I still follow the team), and as far as I'm concerned, Ken Whisenhunt should buy a steak dinner for everyone on that punt coverage team. They picked his ass up after that horrile time-out call at the end of regulation.
