KC-Indy Liveblog: Pre-Game and 1st Quarter

Saturday, January 06, 2007

All right, let's get it on! The NBC studio crew for this game are the good old boys minus Collinsworth, who's doing color for the game along with, I believe Tom Hammond, on play-by-play. Cris Collinsworth is part of why I wanted to live-blog this: it'll be interesting to see how he responds to dealing with a semi-professional calling the game. I caught the Skins-Giants last week in a bar and Bryant Gumbel should not be allowed anywhere near the play-by-play mike.

I will do like AA and pluck your impeccable humor from the comments for the threads today.

Ooh, Jim Mora takes Collinsworth's place in-studio....no uncomfortable questions, I bet. New Orleans' Payton is Coach of the Year. They talked to Titans coach Jeff Fisher about how KC can beat the Colts. Collinsworth is cracking about getting replaced by Mora and they're cracking on Bettis before CC gets to breaking down the defenses before the game.

"If that game had gone the other way, you might not be sitting here right now." - BC to JB

I really don't know why the A-Team is calling Dallas-Seattle. This is the one game I'm not sure I'll even watch, because both teams have been playing so damn poorly. JB gets props for calling Coach Buzzcut's departure, and now over to Peter King -- who lays down some pure speculation about Cowher going to Miami to replace Saban in a year. I can't think of anything worse than seeing the Chin in teal. He's doing a bit better with summing up the Colts' upcoming problematic off season.

It always kind of looks like Herm shaved -- he and Dungy are talking about getting mistaken for each other. This is a good insert by CC, with the Edwards classic. "YOU PLAY TO WIN THE GAME!"

"THIS IS OUUUR COUNTRAY!" I think I'm suffering from TV Stockholm Syndrome with regard to that commercial, because I find myself actually starting to like that song. Someone help me. Thankfully, it looks like Pink has been given the playoffs off from singing themes. Bob Neumeier is the sideline reporter. NBC needs to up its hottie quotient of sideline reporters; Dick Ebersol, you need to get on that badly. KC wins the toss and will receive, which is a damn big deal because they need to score right out of the gate.

Tony Gonzalez does his best Tony Montana impersonation. Nice. 3 and out for KC on the first series of the game: not so nice. Even less nice: Joseph Addai looks good early, catching one from Peyton and then running for a quick first down. And Manning looks to be locked in early with a lot of time to get rid of it. He's already performing early surgery with passes to both TEs Clark and Utecht.

The Chiefs force Manning backwards and into one of those dump passes that loses yardage for 3rd a 16. Manning threw behind Harrison, and it's a 4th, so Viniateri is in for a FG attempt, and it's good from 48 yards. Colts 3-0. Dante Hall gets wrecked on the kickoff return.

Trent Green's wife is kinda MILF-ish. KC won't do squat today if they keep throwing the dumps to the side, because Indy is stuffing LJ right now. Another three and out with a pass that was lucky not to be a pick six.

"The Chiefs look really nervous out here." - CC.

NBC wrote out the long commands for one of the Colts' plays. Am I the only one who thinks coaches make calling plays ten times more complicated than necessary? Manning is still throwing over the middle with ease, nailing Harrison twice in a row, with the latest play for 42 yards. Where is Ty Law? Indy's got a 1st and goal after a Clark catch, and Addai just muscled his way to the 3. Two more chances to punch it n. Manning overthrows Clark after Addai gets stopped up, and here comes Viniateri again. Colts, 6-0. Still a good stand by the Chiefs; anytime you keep the Colts out of the end zone, you're doing well.

The Mercury spokeswoman is GORGEOUS. (Her name is Jill Wagner, apparently.)

How many synonyms and adjectives will TH and CC come up with to describe the Colts' O? "High-octane" has been used at least twice already, and I know I heard a "high-powered" in there somewhere. And on 3rd down, Dwight Freeney puts the hurt on Trent Green for our first sack of the game. The Chiefs are flaccid right now.

First quarter, over. Colts, 6-0.

so much for scoring early-throwing a 7 yard hook pass on 3rd and 9 didn't help

Yeah, that doesn't work if Indy knows you're coming with the rush the first two times.

AA - hopefully it's long enough to get you through the games.

Mora in the studio. That's good, I was wondering if there was any point in publishing my Mora piece today.

I'm getting a sick feeling about this game (I am a Kansas boy). If Law had taken that INT in, or the Chiefs had gone for it on 4th instead of shanking the FG, I'd feel like we were in good shape.
