Versus Follows The Big 10 Network And Releases Their Announcing Teams
Monday, July 23, 2007
I think the one thing that sums up Versus hiring power is that they have a Hockey Announcer as their lead broadcaster. Nothing against Joe Beninati, but we are dealing with two different sports here. He's a Caps guy, so good luck to him. Here's the rest of the breakdown.
Mountain West Games: Lead- Joe Beninati, Analyst- Glenn Parker, Sideliner- Tim Neverett
Big XII Games: Lead- Ron Thulin, Analyst- Kelly Stouffer(!), Sideliner- Lewis Johnson
Pac 10 Games: Lead- Ted Robinson, Analyst- Kelly Stouffer, Sideliner- Lewis Johnson
In an apparent cost cutting move ex-Seahawk, and Dave Krieg backup, Kelly Stouffer will do double duty on games with Lewis Johnson. I say double duty with a grain of salt because that total of Pac 10 and Big XII games comes to 5. The rest of the 19 games Versus will air are Mountain West affairs. See the list below for all the games (as you can tell some games aren't even filled.....

Brand Spanking New Big 10 Network Sets Its Announcing Lineup (Awful Announcing)

I can't tell if that was sarcastic or not.....I'm going with yes.
I see this as a win/win scenario. More football on TV (Even on as obscure a channel as OL..I mean Versus)is always good, and having unqualified play by play and color guys do them gives Awful Announcing more material to work with. See? Win/win!
I don't think Beninati's qualified to do hockey, let alone football, and he's been calling hockey for years. The perfect way to describe him would be "over dramatic douche."
Beninati does Major League Lacrosse games on ESPN2. Lacrosse is frequently played on football fields. Therefore, Joe is perfectly qualified to do football on Versus.
