Police responding to a fight at a private school found a 14-year-old student unconscious and unresponsive after another student apparently struck him in the head when they argued while playing whiffle ball.

Chattanooga Police Lt. Kim Noorbergen said Tuesday that juvenile detectives were investigating the Sunday afternoon altercation between the two McCallie School students in the campus gym.

Noorbergen said the student was admitted to a hospital with a serious head injury but his condition was improving.

She said no charges have been filed but detectives were continuing to interview witnesses.
