Gumbel To Miss Thursday Night Game

Tuesday, December 11, 2007

I don't know if you can really be happy at someone else's expense when they're sick, but just the same Bryant Gumbel will be out for this Thursday's game between the Broncos and Texans. Via the Houston Chronicle...

NFL Network play-by-play announcer Bryant Gumbel is suffering from a sore throat and will be replaced by Tom Hammond for Thursday's Broncos-Texans broadcast at Reliant Stadium, a network spokesman said Tuesday.

Hammond will join Cris Collinsworth, with whom he called a playoff game last year for NBC, for the NFL Network broadcast, said network spokesman Seth Palansky.
Tom Hammond should fit in nicely because he's been covering one crappy Football team all year in Notre Dame. Two should be no problem. I kid I kid. Gumbel is resting his voice for this Saturday Night's contest between the Bengals and 9ers. While I don't like when other people suffer....the possibility of a game in which a congested Gumbel is working with Deion Sanders and Marshall Faulk could be gold.

Get well Bryant. In fact, rest your voice until, say January 2008.

Thanks for this heads up. I wrote this over on Eye on Sports Media:

"Gumbel might regret being sick for the game. The last time Hammond got a "one-time" gig, it was with NBC Sports for the Breeder's Cup in 1984. After that show won some Emmy's, Hammond got to stick around for a career."

worth reading on petrino, refreshing to see a lead story ripping someone apart instead of being a fluff piece

An early Christmas gift! Maybe the NFL network will get a clue and stop bringing this guy back into the booth.

Hammond's not bad, but I don't understand why they don't use Harry Kalas. After all, he IS the voice of NFL Films. Plus he does the voice overs for NFL network promos, and he calls NFL on the Radio. It would be a no-brainer to have him as the voice for games on the NFL Network.

Girly eyes! Gumbel must have gotten a sore throat from all that excitement in his voice these past 3 weeks.

Why don't they just get Pam Ward to do the game? Even she sounds better than Bryant Mumble.

I beleive Harry Kalas will be doing thursdays game for Westwood One. He's done the last few thursday night games on the network and I'd imagine being under contract to them prohibits or restricts him from doing the TV.

Harry Kalas would be a great choice. So would Marv Albert.

Didn't Greg Gumbel miss a game earlier this month for similar reasons? That gives new meaning to "Oh, brother!"

Dick Enberg does the Thursday Night games for Westwood One, not Harry Kalas. Pat Summerall and Marv Albert would be logical choices to replace him.

Well Marv Albert can't because he does the NBA on TNT on Thursdays.

But really, anybody's an improvement over Gumbel.
