Magic Johnson Does Not Watch The NBA

Thursday, January 31, 2008

It's almost not funny how bad the Knicks are this year (I said almost). I've gone from not watching them at all last year to watching every game I can this year to see how bad they play.

The team had been playing better, but seemed to fall off again as they've lost 5 of their last 7. All of the nonsense that's happened this year, their 14-31 record, and a second to last place standing in their conference doesn't matter to Magic Johnson. No Earvin seems to think that the Knicks are making the playoffs, and might even be a seven seed (!?). From the NY Post via Sports By Brooks...

“They’re going to make the playoffs. They’re going to be a tough seventh, eighth seed too, especially now that they’re looking like they’re turning the corner.

“I think they’re going to make the run because everyone is comfortable in their roles. And everybody is playing hard. You could see they are turning the corner. Now everyone knows their roles.’’

“I can see when teams are starting to make their run. I think they’ll settle in after the All-Star break and make their run. Because there’s no way I don’t see them making the seven and eighth seed when I look at the East.’’
Riiiiiight. I think Magic should stick to opening movie theaters for awhile. I also pray this comes up on Inside the NBA tonight.

Magic isn't completely insane on this - the Knicks are five games back with 37 to go. It's not likely, but it's not the most insane thing I've ever heard.

Exactly fred. They are four back on the #7 Hawks in the win column. You only think it's impossible because the "national" media have an agenda to run Isaiah out of town. I can't say they're wrong about him, but they need to give it a rest. They act like it's the end of the fucking world because the Knicks aren't in the playoffs right now, and yet they're still alive. But the way they talk about it, you'd swear that they're as bad as that 76ers team that won like 9 games 35 years ago.

And if they do make the playoffs, there will be no apologies. Just like with all the shit they gave Eli Manning, only to see him lead the team to the Super Bowl.

The New York and "national" just need to relax and shut the fuck up for a little while and burying people before in New York they're dead.

He's just trying to stick up for his boy Isiah, and mask the fact that he just conquered illiteracy.

@anon 5:39:

...let me ask what borough are you from? Did I miss something? Are the perpetually mismanaged, overhyped, over paid Knicks now a sympathetic story? The Knicks won 2 titles (in a four-year span no less), are barely over .500 in their history and idiots like Jack McCallum & Jay Mariotti classify the Knicks as a "storied" NBA franchise. Playing in a storied building in the Tri-State New York area does not a storied franchise make. If that's the case, the Islanders are a storied NHL franchise. The East outside of Boston, Detroit, Orlando & Cleveland may be garbage, but that doesn't mean that Knick fans will be wagging their fingers at their detractors (a la Giants fans now) come late Arpil.

I'm not from anywhere near NYC. I just find it amazing that a team that is that bad, according to the media, is that close to the postseason. You'd swear that they were like 5-35 or something like that. And yet, they're not shedding any tears for the T-Wolves, who were strong-armed into trading one of the league's best players for nothing "for the good of the NBA." They never shut up about the Knicks, and yet the New Orleans Hornets are never talked about and none of their games are on television. That really pisses me off. Nobody outside of the New York media markets gives a shit that the Knicks are bad. Why don't they get it?
