The Nats Show Their Support Of Virginia Tech

Tuesday, April 17, 2007

In a very classy move The Washington Nationals and Major League Baseball let their players show their support for Virginia Tech in their own way Tuesday night. Every player got to put on a VT hat, and the best part was that the idea came from a fan and supportive Marylander....

The idea came from a fan named Dave Lanham from Calvert County, Md. He e-mailed team president Stan Kasten in the middle of the afternoon. Kasten thought it was a great idea and ordered 40 hats. The hats arrived in the first inning.

The Nationals also had a moment of silence for the victims at Virginia Tech for the second straight day.
The hats were shipped right before the game which explains the different colors and logos on each hat. I know the Nationals have a big sponsor in Modells, so if they had a hand in this....good for them.

Sports has always played a role in healing and while this isn't a Piazza homer after 9-11....it's a good gesture.

Here are a couple of photos with more after the jump....

Every once in a long while someone in a position to make a really smart decision uses common sense and good judgment and does exactly the right thing....good for the Nats and for the fans at the game who got a nine-inning reminder of perspective......

It was actually The Sports Authority who apparently sent the hats in, but it's still a very classy move by the team and the league.

So when does Bud Selig publicly denounce this uniform violation?

This wouldn't happen in the NFL I know that.

But great idea. I guess the Nationals do know how to run a baseball organization. That is besides making a good baseball team.

MLB gave its approval before the game. So now Bud has done two things right this season. He must be getting soft or dementia has set in.

Classy move by the Nationals. Plus, it lead to a co-worker asking me this morning, "Did you see the Nationals game last night?" before explaining the story. For the record, that's the first time anyone has ever asked me that question.
