Someone Actually Counted The Number Of Times FOX Showed The Bands Last Night

Thursday, January 03, 2008

Leave it to an AA staple to come up with the information I've been looking for all day. We've already shared with each other how annoying the views of the band were all night during the Fiesta Bowl but now we have a grand total.....and it's insane. From Sports Business Daily's "Daily Digit"....

58– Number of times Fox showed the Univ. of Oklahoma and West Virginia Univ. bands during last night’s Fiesta Bowl telecast.
Are you kidding me? What in the world is the point??? Is there really nothing else going on in the stadium that you can shoot? Good lord. I challenge any of you to drink every time they show either the VT or Kansas Band tonight.

You used to hang band geeks in their lockers, didn't you, AA?

Actually, WF'nVU didn't travel well this year, what with the demoralizing loss to Team Wannstache, the demoralizing loss of their #2 seed in the BCS, the demoralizing loss of Rich Rodriguez, and having to cross the country, with their couches, for the consolation bowl.

If Fox was looking for ticket-buying Mountaineer fans in the stands, they weren't likely to find many. Thus, they turned to the WVU band, then started showing the OU band to ensure "equal time".

It's not Fox's fault that some bands play the same damn thing over and over again in the stands. (Oklahoma, Southern Cal, I'm looking at you. I went to a D-III school, and we had a larger repertoire.)

Band is like Star Trek...only the truly obscure and untalented like it.

I just want to let you all in on something - it's possible for someone enjoying the game to get a glimpse of the band every once in a while. Though FOX was a tad overkill here, it's not a bad thing to take a look at them playing, and give the lesser knowns some publicity.

Why do I post this? To counter what gmoney said, pretty much, in the sense that I know for a fact that you don't have to be truly obscure and untalented to like band. Because it takes talent to be in the band and you don't have to have obscure tastes to enjoy their music. Thanks; don't stereotype if you don't know what you're talking about. Even a "well, in general, what I said is true..." doesn't work here, sorry. I'm not mad, just disappointed some people still think that school bands are such a dorky thing.

Florida State is also VERY guilty of playing the same song. Da-na-na-na-na.... Your welcome, that song and the tomahawk chop is now in your head for the rest of the night.

Did anyone see the camera pan of the girl in the Oklahoma band bored out of her mind and rolling her eyes? She clearly didn't give a crap about the game. Absolutely hillarious and would be a great youtube to add if it can be found.

Actually I wasn't a Band hater in highschool. I dated a girl in the band at one point and actually played trumpet in a Ska Band at one point in my life.

I was a jock too though....Basketball, Baseball, and Cross Country.

Oh and don't get me wrong....I love College bands....they are like the cherry on top of the sundae. But 58 times??? Good lord.

Did you also happen to notice the several times they trained the camera on a Bud Light stadium ad? For a few seconds every quarter or so, there is was a Bud Light sign in all its pointless glory.

Band members are dorks, Jocks are "mentally challenged", and cheerleaders are both "mentally challenged" and whores. Only those who wear all black and cut themselves know the truth.

I'm sure all the band member's families appreciated it.

Um, what about those of us watching for a FOOTBALL GAME? I couldn't care less about the band, and the more time Fox's production crews spend finding the perfect band shot to share with us, the more time they spent screwing with the cut back to action on the field. We're watching football, not attending a band concert or competition. Damn.

I meant to say, only the truly obscure and untalented are IN the band. And the quasi-onscure and still untalented like the band.

Fixed. You are still dorks.

Hey, be glad they showed the band that much. The Capital One Bowl "Halftime show" consisted of a gap-toothed middle-aged guy crooning "Minnie the Moocher" and about 15 seconds of the Michigan band's show (and not even a shot showing the whole band, just a few trumpet players). I honestly don't remember seeing the Florida band. Shame on ABC

The band shots are overkill. This is an offshoot of "fan cam" that Fox Sports began at the 2004 ALCS to capture the Red Sox fans reaction because the director wanted to see them cry as they were swept by the Yankees. Of course, that did not happen and Fox kept right on showing what was going on in the stands.
