Michael Phelps Goes For The Record Tonight (Open Thread)
Saturday, August 16, 2008
It only took me a good seventeen hours to get the clip from last night, but I thought we could use it as an open thread for his record breaking attempt from last night. I had been complaining all last night that I was sick of swimming and sick of Phelps (I'm sure a lot of you felt the same), but I yelled in unison with everyone when he passed Cavic at the last second. The kid is like Tiger Woods, you just don't talk trash to him.
Here's the replay of last night's thrilling win in the 100 Meter Fly and I'll be sure to have tonight's video, win or lose, up much quicker....
I'm also looking for Usain Bolt's insane record of 9.69 secs in the 100 meter final, but in the meantime feel free to leave your thoughts and predictions in the comments. I'll see you early tomorrow morning with the result of the 4x100 Medley.
Frame By Frame Finish (Sports Illustrated)
(P.S.- If this, or any of the Olympic vids get taken down, be sure to let me know. There are ways around NBC's nazi-like approach to taking down vids.)

My brother said that these commentators are so biased. I was like duh, it's the Olympics, they have to cheer for the Americans. NBC wouldn't be happy if they were cheering on the Chinese. Why else is all of NBC's main coverage of the USA athletes? This is the only time when commentators being biased is somewhat acceptable if you know what I mean and that's during the Olympics
Bolt did the record slowing down at the end.
I'll say it- I'm sick and tired of hearing about Michael Phelps. And the faux hero worship has gotten on my last nerve, as well. It's just another case of a collective jumping onto the bandwagon; one which will be completely empty in two weeks.
That was awesome! The only thing missing from that clip was the reaction of Moma Phelps after the race.
bruce,
It's once every 4 years for a swimmer. It's not like people are Johnny Come Latelys. A lot of people thought Phelps could do it in 2004.
he's already got the record. 7 gold medals. tonight would just be icing on the cake.
As a West Coast viewer, I am bothered by the fact that I am unable to watch tonight's event live. This should be a historical event but NBC is ruining it for the Left Coast viewers by putting it on tape-delay. Colin Cowherd was crazy to suggest that NBC is doing a good job. Screw him and NBC!
He has seven Anon...that ties the record. Tonight he can beat it.
It seemed very obvious that Rowdy and Tom were being biased for Torres to win gold. Another great race.
nazi is kind of an antiquated term, shouldn't it be a "chinese capitalist approach" to taking down vids?
Some of the left coast hosts on talk radio today were rabid about the Phelps races not being live. I can see their point - just don't watch it. Crap ratings is the only way to get back at NBC.
Did Hackett just drop an F-bomb after losing to the Tunisian in the last marathon swim race? Just reading lips when he looked up at the times after the race. Kinda looked like it.
Beside the "LIVE" graphic, NBC is occasionally showing the current time in China, East Coast and Pacific time. Did they breakdown and decide to broadcast this stuff live on the left coast?
Rowdy Gaines: (about the australians) "All 4 of these guys were the top 5 in their individual events." Huh?
does he have a girlfriend?
Boring. I wanna see Bolt's WR run.
Right after the race on SportsCenter: The first person to breakdown the exploits of Michael Phelps & 8 golds is....Darren Woodson? Shoulda been you, Emmitt!
did AA go to Ravens stadium to watch the race?
If you live on the southern border of the U.S., there is Mexican TV (Televisa) was the only way to watch the race live. Thanks Dick Ebersole and NBC Universal.
When someone like Michael Phelps comes along and gets the whole country to care about a sport that very few people care about any other day of the week is just incredible.
Lucky for me, I live on the east coast, but I do feel like they should air live on the west coast as well.
Bolt's 100M second most impressive feat of the Olympics next to Lezak. Wow was that awesome!
Anon- I would never be caught dead in that place.
Video coming soon and I'm with Brett....that Bolt run was insane.
lammy: That means that the guy doing the backstroke leg for Australia finished in the top 5 in the 100m back, and likewise for the other three in the 100m breaststroke, butterfly, and freestyle, respectively. (That's also true of the Americans - in fact, Hansen in the 100m breaststroke was the only one who didn't medal in the individual event, and he got 4th, just ahead of Rickard.)
Thanks for getting that video AA I was pissed that that had been the only race I missed but it was certainly worth the wait. I don't know too much about Track & Field but last night had to be embarassing for all the media promoting Tyson Gay as the world's fastest man. He couldn't even beat out the guys left in Bolt's showboating dust...
Video taken down
Incredible...
