Slamball Gets Picked Up By CBS And Versus (Gus Johnson And Tom Tolbert To Announce The Championship)

Thursday, August 21, 2008

I can't tell you how awesome it is to have Slamball back. Remember when that guy shattered his leg between the two tramps back in the day? Well, not only is Slamball going to be new and improved this go around, it actually has a new home thanks to a combination deal that will air the "Sport" on Versus and CBS. Via Variety....

Nascent sport SlamBall is getting a big push from its owners IMG Sports Media and Tollin Prods.

CBS has inked a deal to telecast the action sport’s championship title game in November. And sports cabler Versus will carry eight SlamBall games on Sundays starting Aug. 31.

IMG and Tollin also plan to roll out a full-fledged SlamBall league in 2009 across eight U.S. cities.

Hyped as the first-ever "team action sport," SlamBall mixes elements from basketball, football, hockey, soccer and gymnastics. Former Philadelphia 76ers president and part owner Pat Croce serves as SlamBall’s commissioner.

The Eye will broadcast the final match of the "2008 SlamBall Championship Series" at 5 p.m. Nov. 2 — right after the day’s NFL coverage concludes.
The league is a little bit crazy, but that's kind of what makes it fun. Former Sixers GM, Pat Croce is your Commish and you can add to him the likes of John Starks, Kenny Anderson and Rocket Ismail as coaches.

Another interesting element is the announcers. While I haven't been able to find the Versus' announcers, CBS has gone above and beyond putting a team together. Gus Johnson, Tom Tolbert and even Amare Stoudemire (?!) will be on the call for the Championship Game in November. I'm pretty sure the combo of Gujo and Tolbert will cause a rift in the time/space continuum. Huzzah CBS!

Wasn't this on TNN (SpikeTV) at one point in time with Reggie Theus?

It's not like Amare needs to work on his defense or being less of a softee on the boards...
