OSU Players Using ESPN To Fuel Their Fire

Friday, January 04, 2008

Usually teams use quotes from the opposite teams players and coaches, but that's not the case with Ohio State. OSU coaches put together a DVD of all the talking heads saying bad things about them to motivate their players. Public enemy number one...Mark May....

The DVD, created by Ohio State coaches, is a 10-minute compilation of insults, attacks and put-downs of the Buckeyes that followed their disastrous 41-14 loss to Florida in last year's BCS title game.

"I had my grandma watch it with me, and she started crying," Boone said. "She wanted to kill somebody. She said [ESPN's] Mark May was a liar for calling me slow."

Asked for his favorite part, Barton employed his best sarcastic tone.

"We were excited to see the 'PTI' guys," he said. "And I'm a big Mark May fan. He's not a big fan of me, but I have his poster on the wall -- Mark May in a Redskins jersey and a Pitt jersey. I remember him and Woody Paige and Skip Bayless, I'm thankful for their support."

Barton, who joked that he would wear a Mark May throwback jersey later, said the DVD accomplished its mission. "Would it make you mad if I made a DVD of people saying how bad your newspaper article was?" Barton asked a reporter.
I don't know how much that would motivate me, but it would definitely piss me off. I'd love to see this DVD if anyone can put it on YouTube. No not for the site....just to laugh at OSU.

Insults still sting OSU (Chicago Tribune)

maybe they should stop paying attention to bspn and pay attention to lsu. same as last year listened to the media, instead of the game.

they don't like their image than you should have not lost to the gators. same thing like stoops he got pissed before the game with wvu about losing bowl games. you don't like your image win then and don't play the entire state of ohio.

if you need paige, bayless, and may to get you pissed you are already in a bad place.

lsu is just getting ready not worrying but playing and suckeyes are worred about the three biggest douches.

Hasn't every ESPN analyst picked Ohio State to win the game?

And they dedicated an entire halftime show of one of their bowl games to "dispel the myth" that Ohio State was too slow.

That's okay. I'm sure LSU is using that as motivation. That and the fact that ESPN is trying to force them to share ANOTHER potential BCS title with USC.

Why does everyone care what a bunch of analyst think anyway? Its their job to watch the game and critize. So if you get beat you might be percieved as slow. Does that make you slow? Not necessarily.

It cracks me up that people goes ape s*** over Lee Corso picks when clearly he has no outcome on the game and is usually about wrong half the time. I could careless if Lee Corso picks my team.

And this reminds me of Houston Nutt pumping up Run-DMC for the heisman after the LSU game. Calling out Mark May and Lou Holtz by name as if they are some kind of football Gods who have the power to change and shape everyones opinion.

Memo to College Atheletes: analysts like those on ESPN are paid to scrutinize and criticize. So don't worry about what they say worry about your opponent.

jj

according to all the suckeye fans on scout.com bspn hates them. the reason bspn hates them is because the of the btn, yet bspn paid them 1 billion for 10 for games. herbie is a traitor and everyone hates them and is jealous.

go over their if you wanna see crazy and pity. their fans don't even talk about the game or players, just how everyone hates them.

To anon 12:18....Correct me if I am wrong...but most schedules for teams are made a few years in advance....I still remember a few years ago when Texas and OSU played early in the season, both ranked....and also aren't USC and OSU playing next year? Every team plays schools that are not strong because it helps bring in money for those smaller schools.

In case you didn't notice they did "win" this season...

Do you really think that the "dvd" is the only thing that is getting them ready for the game...seriously. I love how people like to blow up little stories they read in the newspaper...

Did ESPN declare that Jim Tressel was going to be the coach at Michigan on the day of their biggest ball game?

And if you don't think that ESPN doesn't have the ability to shape the minds of sports fans, you are out of your mind. It's called agenda setting. If ESPN talks about it, we talk about it. Hell, just look at this blog. If ESPN ignores it, we ignore it. Have you ever seen a hockey post on this board?

How much is that DVD worth when OSU goes down again for a second year in a row?

Jan 4, 2008, 2:03:00 PM

What the heck happened here. Am I being questioned for the post or the fact that there's not Hockey posts? I'm confused.

Jan 4, 2008, 2:26:00 PM

No, AA. Nothing about hockey. Somebody said that what ESPN says doesn't matter. And I used hockey as an example of why what ESPN says does matter.

It's not like hockey isn't being broadcast out there somewhere. And badly, I might add. But why don't we (not just you) talk about it? I guarantee you that if hockey came back on ESPN, and they pumped their billion-dollar synergy/hype machine behind it, we'd be live-blogging the first game.

ESPN has no power. We're talking about a network that sold David Beckham to us. And made Danica Patrick (a driver who has won ZERO races) into a household name.

jj- Aren’t you contradicting yourself by saying that ESPN has no power but then say that if they did broadcast hickey games AA would be live-blogging them? You are not making any sense

I'm confused about what the problem is. ESPN has such a stranglehold on televised sports, and they serve as our only source for televised sports news. What they say can't help but matter. They're the only people saying it. Part of the reason it happened is because they used to be good at what they do. But somewhere down the line, they got in the business of myth-building shaping public opinion.

Hell, they have half the country thinking that a team that has won one BCS championship from 2003 to 2007 (USC) is a "Dynasty" and deserves another share of the title. That's power, my friend.

Part of it is.

I didn't know Trev Alberts was still alive.

Thanks for the explanation JJ and I see where Anon's trying to go with this. I think in all honesty the decision to live-blog hockey has everything to do with interest and not what ESPN was doing with it. I mean I didn't live-blog Arena Football or NASCAR.

ESPN has power but only in Sports that people care about....NASCAR excluded. That fan base is at least smart enough to realize they are hurting their sport. Hockey just wants viewers back.

Slap that pride sticker on Adrian College's Helmet Mark May. Do it. Go Bulldogs!

(Sorry, I'm just so thrilled AA selected AC for the screen grab)
