College Gameday Heads To The Mecca Of College Football- Williamstown, Massachusetts.....Wait, What?

Tuesday, November 06, 2007

In one of the oddest moves in recent memory ESPN is passing on every Division 1-A contest to head to Division III Williams College to get you hyped for the Williams Purple Cows (Ephs) versus the Amherst Lord Jeffery Amhersts.

I'm not kidding.

For some strange reason ESPN is passing on heading to the CAL-USC game, the Florida-South Carolina Game, the UCONN-Cincy game, the Illinois-OSU game, and Michigan- Wisconsin games to bring you all the excitement of Division III Football this Saturday Morning!

It's the 4-3 Lord Jeffery Amhersts versus the 5-2 Ephs for the Little Three (something) Cup/Trophy/Jug. A combined record of nine and five and the game not being televised will not stop Gameday!

In all seriousness, this is the oldest conference in College Football and the teams have played each other 122 times, but come on! Did somebody have pictures of Lee Corso or something....good lord.

Live From Williamstown Mass (ESPN TV)

25 Comments:

No fans show up on the west coast until it is almost over. USC and UCLA re not playing for anything.

FLA and USC have like three losses each and the Spurrier angle is played out.

UCONN and Cincy who cares.

Gameday always does this once or twice a year. They go to the Military schools, all black colleges, or Harvard and Brown,

Not a suprise to me.

This isn't even the best matchup in the NESCAC this weekend...Middlebury (6-1) is playing at Tufts (5-2)

Enh...I guess you're right Anon. I do remember them covering the Southern-Grambling game, but that was two years ago.

The last military broadcast was in 2003 and the cut it short do to lightning. It's really not as common as you think.

Yet they haven't gone to a Lehigh-Lafayette game once...

142 and counting.

They should be in Pittsford, NY, where St. John Fisher and Alfred(my parents' alma mater) are playing for the Empire 8 title and an automatic berth into the D-III playoffs. Unfortunately, AU has gone from being the number one seed in the East to possibly missing the playoffs after losing their last two games. Go Saxons!

Don't be hatin' on D-3. Actually, they should be going to a game where the schools actually GO to the playoffs. Next year, they should go to the Wabash / DePauw game for the Monon Bell. It's been on National TV (even ESPN2) and is always a spirited little ball of hate. Check it out Saturday on HDNet.

D-3 players are usually just an inch shorter, 10 pounds lighter and two ticks off the 40 time. But they can play ball, and they go to class and become titans of industry, employing all the washed up NFL wanna bes.

They did Harvard-Pennsylvania in 2002.

Still better than what their other alternative probably was: Sitting in a studio, which they usually do once a year.

When I saw this week's schedule I thought they would go to Athens for the Auburn-Georgia game (Top 20 teams,it is The Deep South's Oldest Rivalry), but then I remembered it was on CBS and ESPN has already been to the site of a CBS game twice (Florida-LSU and Florida-Kentucky,). Its fine for this week to do a storied lower-level rivalry. However, Ohio State-Michigan is the 17th and Kansas-Missouri (if they are still top 10) is the 24th so those are must-go-to games

I thought they would go to Miami for the last game EVER at the Orange Bowl. They coulda had the '72 dolphins, Joe Namath, old canes... think of the stories. But no, they chose a DIII game.

How bout Cortland State vs. Ithaca College in DIII...the Cortaca Jug? Coined by Sports Illustrated as the Biggest Little Game in the Nation

Yep. No East Coast Bias there. And I'll get chewed out by gmoney for pointing it out.

This sucks and so does ESPN. I go to UGA and it is the best matchup this week. however, ESPN has a history of hating UGA and so does Gameday IE corso complaining about our conditions. Whatever, were going to finish big this year and next year they will have to talk about us!

I think its great they give some small schools some pub. And hey the students are smarter than most there so maybe the signs will be better than we've seen lately.

If they are going to waste a gameday, how about Mount Union? They always rip shit up in whatever division they're in.

anon, I like the way you think!!!

This is a pretty big rivalry, for what it's worth. Too bad it's in Williamstown and not in Amherst, just for the almost inevitable showing of "the Brain" on live tv.

gmoney- Mt. Union has lost only three games this DECADE, has 6 shutouts while allowing just 24 points in 9 games this year, and is averaging 53.9 pts/game. Ripping shit up is an understatement...
The Stagg Bowl is played here in my neck of the woods, and I had the chance go to the game a few years back. The atmosphere that day rivaled that of any D-I game I 've been to.

yeah, this is ridiculous they're not coming to the UGA-Auburn game. gameday does hate UGA. i'm a senior here and they've had a number of legit games to come to athens and never have. i mean if you're looking for a good rivalry game, this is it.
no disrespect to the small schools, but you're not playing for anything meaningful. nobody cares about D3 or whatever the hell its called now

Williams/Amherst is actually a great game. The game is featured in the College Football Hall of Fame as one of the sport's greatest rivalries. Neither my wife nor I went to either school (my brother went to Williams), but we are dragging our 1 and 3 year old boys on an hour and a half drive to see the game (and, yes, we made these plans long before we heard Game Day was going to be there). These kinds of rivalries and traditions are what make college football great (no slight against Div 1, my wife and I met at Notre Dame).

Gameday should be in Medford Mass to see the TU Jumbs throttle the Midd Panthers for their first CAC title ever - its gonna be sick, look for Jnas on the sideline #1

they're doing it to create fuss for D3 football, if they wanted to bring in ratings they should air the
Mount Union Purple Raider game against Marietta. Mount has the best team in their history. They have only given up 24 points all year. They've also gone 22 straight quarters without giving up a point. Also they set the NCAA record for points in a quarter with 56 against Averett in week one. I could continue forever, but I think you get the point. Mount would dra a wide television audience becuase they are one of the best teams in history, especially this year.
