Sunday Countdown To Break Number Of Analysts/Guests For 3-Hour Edition Of Show

Friday, February 01, 2008

Okay are you ready? Here's who they're throwing at you starting at 11am:

Chris Berman, Mike Ditka, Tom Jackson, Keyshawn Johnson, Emmitt Smith, Chris Mortensen, Don Shula, Mercury Morris, Mike Tirico, Ron Jaworski, Steve Young, Sal Paolantonio and Ed Werder.

So that's a ton of peop....wait there's more? No way....Bill Walton, Jason Krause, Jeremy Schapp, Kenny Mayne, Greg Garber, Rachel Nichols, and last but certainly not least..... and Mike Krzyzewski (I kid you not). Whew. Okay now that we've got that covered what will they be covering? They decided to ignore my request for an "All Emmitt Hour" and went with the some of the features below (complete with schedule!).

-Opening Tease: The Last Step to Perfection? (11 a.m. ET) (Coach K, Bill Walton, and Don Shula)
-Takin’ It to the House with Jason Krause: Super Bowl Week (11:30 a.m.)
-Belichick & Navy Effect (12 p.m.) (Jeremey Schapp on the Pats Coach growing up with Navy Football)
-Mayne Event: Sopranos’ Revenge? (12 p.m.)
-Patriots Offensive Line Shares Bond with Beards (12:30 p.m.)
-A Lieutenant’s Message to the Giants (12:30 p.m.) (A real life Lieutenant speaks to the Giants)
-Don Shula and Mercury Morris of the 1972 Dolphins on Set (1 p.m.)
-Eli Manning & Family (1 p.m.)
-Tom Brady’s Rise to Superstar Quarterback (1:30 p.m.)
But wait.....THERE'S MORE! My two favorite highlights of the show are below....
1. "The Countdown crew will give their Super Bowl picks via special delivery from the Arizona Pony Express during the same weekend the city of Scottsdale commemorates the Express with a statue near ESPN’s set location in Arizona."

2. "Popular ATO Records artists Rodrigo y Gabriela, the fast-fingered, acoustic heavy metal duo from Mexico via Dublin, will highlight the Southwest flavor of this week’s special edition of Countdown through exclusive video segments which will air throughout the show."
This is going to be a tour-de-force of awfulness. I hope you can be there with me starting at 11am sharp folks! And who the hell are Rodrigo and Gabriela? Anyone???

Oh okay.

Actually, Rodrigo and Gabriela are pretty impressive players. Here they are on Letterman. They have absolutely nothing to do with football, but I'd rather hear them play than Emmitt mangle the English language.

-Don Shula and Mercury Morris of the 1972 Dolphins on Set (1 p.m.)

Does it say what time they leave? I want to make sure I don't miss the rest of the stuff.

I love how ESPN PR even fucks up their own announcements.

-A Lieutenant’s Message to the Giants (12:30 p.m.) (A real life Lieutenant speaks to the Giants)

The man is a lieutenant colonel. Ask any army man it's a HUGE difference.

Here's the prin story by Greg Garber. Very moving as to what the man's been through all for serving our country,

Did Rodrigo and Gabriela open up for the Gin Blossoms?

21 people. You've got to be joking. But it's ESPN, they have to overdo everything.

Could we pay you to keep your music snark to yourself? I enjoy your site very much but it's obvious that

1. You have a limited knowledge of music and

2. Your taste in music is fairly suspect

The fact that you have not heard of a performer really shouldn't be your barometer for judging music. None of these bands that you have cracked on lately are at all "underground" or unheard of acts. Even when you've heard of an act, as in the case of Tom Petty, you don't seem to have any knowledge of them.

Stick to what you do well - critiquing announcers and analysts and whining that ESPN didn't erect a shrine in studio to Sean Taylor.

Oooh, can we get Lou Holtz to give a Patriots pep talk?

And if you're talking playoff beards, they gotta bring in Buccigross or Melrose, right?

The fact that some people give a damn about musical performances more than the Super Bowl sounds pretty bad to me. You must be one of them.

I'd consider my knowledge of music pretty vast and the fact that I don't know someone doesn't have anything to do whether they're good or not.

Music snobs who classify people as music snobs are the height of annoying.

With all those people on set, let's hope none of them walk under the camera.

Rodrigo y Gabriela is excellent. Their performance will probably be the highlight of the show - and not in an untentional comedy sort of way. I'm interested to see how the WWL handles it.

Rodrigo and Gabriela are the brother and sister with the freaky black tears that kill people from the second season of "Heroes", right?

Gosh! ESPN is overdoing it again. But what else is new? Pregame shows are officially unwatchable if they already weren't. 21 people for 3 hours? Absolutely shocking!!

Rodrigo y Gabriella are awesome, they are from Mexico but live in Ireland now. Old metal heads that switched over to flamenco style acoustic. They do a version of Metallica's "Orion" that is pretty cool.

Anyway, I'm sure they speak better English than Emmitt and won't make up as many words. I bet playing scrabble with Emmitt must take forever and a day.

Interesting doing a story on the Navy football connection, since the academy's honor code says you should not lie, cheat or steal or tolerate those who do.

Fot those who dont know, Belichick's father was a longtime assistant coach at Navy. I may not have the exact wording of the honor code right.
