Breaking: Reilly To Co-Host PTI Today And Tomorrow With Wilbon
Monday, August 11, 2008
You knew it was only a matter of time. For tonight and tomorrow's editions of PTI you'll be getting a dose of the one and only, Richard Paul Reilly. Tony is on assignment in Green Bay for Monday Night Football, so we get stuck with the ESPN The Mag writer for two days.
Expect a lot of PGA Championship talk and cheesy jokes about how he can't watch primetime Olympic coverage because he's already in bed. Actually that's not really any different than what Tony gives on a day to day basis, so he should fit right in.

so expect a lot of pinstripe suits that were alright in '99? Cool.
He has been dreadful on the show today. Why is he on my TV???????????
Calling Wilbon Urkel for tucking his Cubs jersey in was pretty funny.
I tried to watch but Rick Reilly brok my television. Grumble, grumble.
Hey AA, can you please proof stuff before you put it up here. I read every post on this site and generally agree with you, but you lose something when you use improper grammar and make typos.
If you're goal is to prove the MSM'ers wrong and show them that blogs are a good thing it doesn't help to have sentences like "...and cheesy jokes about he can't watch..." , and "...not really an different than..." that don't make sense.
Once again, keep up the good work, just please proof some of this stuff.
"If you're goal is to prove the MSM'ers wrong and show them that blogs are a good thing"
Thanks for YOU'RE help editor Anon....the check is in the mail.
The grammar police continue to be out in force. Some may hate these comments, but I enjoy them immensely.
I didn't see the show and couldn't DVR PTI. Other than an Urkel reference, how did RR do today?
Reilly is a pompous ass. "I hate the Yankees." Way to be objective. Eat a d*ck.
AA: Your opinions on Kornheiser are well documented but...
1. Reilly was NOT better than Tony is on PTI
2. If Reilly called MNF, I would mute the entire game (instead of muting after the first half)
3. Kornheiser making of Jaws' mancrush on Aaron Rogers is actually really funny (nothing Reilly specific here, but the game is on--and not yet on mute--in the background)
What is with this network's determination to put writers on air? It's akin to a GM saying, "That Sidney Crosby sure is a great hockey player, let's give him $90 million to play shortstop for us next year!"
smug, annoying, thanks for the warning! why has kornheiser been on the show only once in the past month.........and looking like he was on his deathbed the one time he did show up?
And he's gonna be on again tomorrow?
...kill me now.
Thanks for the warning. I can delete the show without watching it.
Is it true that TK wore a Favre Jets jersey on MNF tonight? As a longtime TK sycophant, I am ashamed.
I think we all got Rick-rolled today. RR is a pathetic chum.
In case you missed the "highlights":
- RR had a personal chat with Michael Phelps (name drop 1)
- RR went mountain biking with Lance Armstrong (name drop 2, and he mentioned it TWICE!)
- RR leans when he talks
- As mentioned: RR hates the Yankees (way to be biased...and I'm a Sox fan!)
- RR is going to name his kids Bei and Jing if they are twins (har, har...lunchbox)
"Never gonna give you up..."
To this point I've had almost no exposure to this Reilly fellow whom the blogosphere and blog-comment-osphere seems to passionately despise. So my assessment of his "PTI" performance comes with none of the preconceptions that have clearly colored the opinions of my distinguished fellow commenters above.
I thought Reilly was fine on "PTI".
For a first-timer, he did quite well, actually. He was not awkward at all on camera, and he seemed to have a very good rapport with Wilbon.
I thought Reilly was much better than the other summertime "PTI" fill-ins-- the amusing but overly-self-conscious Dan LeBatard, the stuttering and stammering Bob Ryan, and the never-let-others-get-a-word-in-edgewise J.A. Adande. The latter two also tend to talk at 150 miles per hour. Reilly's steady, calm delivery on "PTI" was a breath of fresh air after seeing so much of Ryan and Adande lately.
(Bob Ryan sounds exactly like this: "Bup-bup-bup-bup-bup-bup-bup-bup-bup-bup.")
This isn't to say I don't want Mr. Tony back. And yes, Reilly did get a bit name-droppy during the show. But I thought he did a more than adequate job in his first "PTI" co-hosting appearance.
I'm watching PTI on ESPN.com right now and it doesn't seem like the apocalypse is coming. I thought he forced jokes during the derby and it didn't feel natural but he seemed a lot better on PTI. I'm not saying he should be on there all the time or get his own show( but we all know if there is a slight increase in PTI ratings, ESPN will green light "The RR show"). Maybe it is a testament of how good Wilbon is but it seemed like the show went smoothly. After all PTI isn't a success because they talk about the issues but how they talk about it.
I'm a HUGE Lance Armstrong fan so I enjoyed the name dropping. I can't criticize anyone for bragging about getting to hang out with because In my Opinion he is one the greatest athletes I have watched.
Rick Reilly is the old guy who hangs out at the college frat parties hoping to go all Larry Eustacy on the co-eds.
Reilly on ESPN is a fucking joke and just shows how unwatchable ESPN is.
"Reilly is going to cost host PTI"
Otherise known as the day PTI officially jumped the shark (soory to use that overdone phrase, but it fits)
@j rose:
That was the day Jay Mariotti hosted.
That had to have been Letterman's worst episode ever.
