Down And Distance Still Confuses Pam Ward

Monday, November 03, 2008

This was covered in the PWC on Saturday, but the World of Issac happened to pull the video, so I thought I'd share the clip. Michigan State had a pretty amazing comeback (as amazing as Big Ten Football can get I guess) against Wisconsin on Saturday, and it took a game winning FG after a nice drive to do so.

During said drive, the Spartans were out of timeouts and had a third and ten with :41 on left on the clock. Listen to the brilliance of Pam as she calls for the ever-genius, "spike the ball on fourth down" play!

Again, this is the announcer that the Washington Post referred to as, "always prepared to the max, knows her Xs and Os inside and out and sets up her analyst partners beautifully." Man, did she ever setup Ray Bentley on that one! I think we might have our Pammy winner before I even post the voting this afternoon. Good lord.

To be honest, that wasn't that bad... she made a mistake... all announcers do it... including me, when I actually get an on-air gig.

She was just caught up in the chaos, and forgot the down for a moment... thats partly what color guy is there for, to pick up the PBP person like that.

Still funny though.

She set up her analyst perfectly... a perfect opportunity for him to tell her what an idiot she is.

Pam Ward reminds me of Fox TV's 'Bones'...sounds really smart, but still makes some weird statements.

You know, I've heard MANY announcers do that. I've done that broadcasting HS and College football back in the day. So I think Pam needs a break. Besides my daughters like listening to her - empowering women and all.

I never watch any game she announces. Her voice is like nails on a chalkboard.

Winner! Winner! Chicken dinner!

I don't think Ray Bentley is necessarily that bad (he's actually quite insightful doing arena football), but he got stuck with the worst possible PbP partner for college football. And while some people say, "oh, it's just one mistake", well this isn't the first time that Pam Ward made that "one mistake". She says stuff like that quite frequently.

I agree with Jfein. Bentley is a great Arena Football color guy. And on college football he's just not with the best pbp person and spends significant time trying to compensate.

See, it's sexist to criticize her, she is above criticism because men are, like, stronger and stuff.

Post-modernist bullshit doesn't belong in football...but I guess, we're beyond that point now.

Soon we will have women playing in the NFL, NBA and MLB...

But it's just cuz us men are mean patriarchs and stuff. Women are marvelous.

Thread jack--

AA, the SlamBall championship was on at 4 on CBS yesterday and Gus Johnson was hilarious on the play-by-play. I thought that his head was going to be explode.

I'm all for anybody broadcasting correctly. She screws up quite frequently. It
s been 30 plus years, surely someone, anyone, has grown a brain?

So, when Mike Patrick calls an 8 yard gain a 2 yard loss he's just confused for one play. When Pam Ward forgets the down and calls for a spike, she's labeled a bloody incompetent at her entire job? So correcting herself when reminded it was fourth down was just, what, a lucky guess?

Wankers.
