Congrats, Rays And Cubs

Sunday, September 21, 2008

Taking a short break to note the awesome accomplishment of the Tampa Bay Rays this year: with last night's win, they've locked up a guaranteed playoff spot (either the AL East title or the Wild Card, depending on the rest of their play next week.) Going from worst in the league to a playoff spot is one heck of an accomplishment, and considering their pitching, they are not a team I want to go against in the first round despite lack of experience.

Also, the Cubs put their stamp on the NL Central last night, and their Division Series opponent will depend on how the Wild Card plays out -- if it's the Brewers, they'll go play the NL West winner; more likely, if it's an NL East team, it will be the Wild Card winner.

So, tip your beer or soda for both those teams right now.

It's a catchphrase manager Joe Maddon created. Nine guys playing nine innings together to become one of the eight teams in the playoffs. That's how 9=8.

Fox didn't send NYC viewers to the 9th inning of Twins-Rays on Saturday. A Gannett-owned Sunday paper in NJ didn't bother to report the Rays or Cubs clinching.

The national media shudders at a possible Rays-Phillies World Series.
