A Look At TBS' Pairings For The Opening Round Of The MLB Playoffs

Monday, September 29, 2008

TBS has all four of the opening round series during the 2008 MLB Playoffs and they have finally released the pairings for each of them. TBS had some interesting choices with whom to put with whom, and where to send their top team, but in the end I think they did the best they could. The top team of Chip Caray and Buck Martinez get to go L.A. for the Sox and Angels, and here are the rest of the teams and schedules for game each series....

Milwaukee Brewers vs. Philadelphia Phillies (Wednesday, 2:30pm) - Brian Anderson, Joe Simpson and John Smoltz
Los Angeles Dodgers vs. Chicago Cubs (Wednesday, 6:30pm) - Dick Stockton, Ron Darling and Tony Gwynn
Boston Red Sox vs. Los Angeles Angels (Wednesday, 10pm) - Chip Caray and Buck Martinez
Chicago White Sox or Minnesota Twins vs. Tampa Bay Rays (Thursday, 2:30pm) - Don Orsillo and Harold Reynolds

But wait.....there's more! The White Sox-Tigers makeup game is on ESPN2 today at 2pm with Dave O'Brien, Orel Hershiser and Steve Phillips on the call. If the White Sox win, the one game Playoff between the Sox and Twins will be Tuesday on TBS with Dick Stockton, Ron Darling and Harold Reynolds on the call. And lastly the two other games on Thursday following Game One of the AL Central Winner and the Rays will be Brewers-Phils at 6:30pm and Dodgers-Cubs at 9:30pm.

Whew....okay. I think all of that is right. As far as the booths go, I really like the teams of Orsillo-Reynolds and Anderson-Simpson-Smoltz. I will also be doing everything I can to avoid the dreadful trio of Stockton, Darling and Gwynn. It's going to be a fun Playoff season and I hope you're ready.

Will the curse of Stockton live on?

All of Chicago suddenly got very nervous!

I'm gonna go ahead and guess that the fine print in the lower left hand corner says something along the lines of 'Three of these players will not actually be appearing'.

Isn't the makeup game today, not Tuesday? It might be difficult playing a makeup game on Tuesday vs. the Tigers imidiately followed up by the playoff game vs. the Twins the same day.

Good to see 1/4 of the teams on the TBS banner in the playoffs.

Dude, your lost on Darling. One of the best analysts in the game.

Monday's ESPN 2 game CWS and DET will be Dave O'Brien, Orel Hershisher and Steve Phillips. That comes from Obie on Red Sox radio call of the first game on Sunday afternoon.

I have to agree that the Orsillo/Reynolds team will be enjoyable. And it is not just me being a homer.

Yes Anon, the makeup game is today. Sorry....I wrote that last night but posted this morning.

Other Anon, I just don't what it is I don't like about Darling. I don't think he's necessarily that bad, but he just gets on my nerves.

THE DICK STOCKTON CURSE LIVES ON!! I'm sure the Sox will win vs. Detroit and then lose the tiebreaker game because of Dickie. And then my beloved Cubs will get swept thanks to ol' Dick Stockton. Do NOT doubt it!

Listening to Troy Aikman compliment the Redskins was almost orgasmic. Who cares about the playoffs, the Skins just embarrassed the Cowboys.

DS didn't curse the J-E-T-S yesterday. Ol' #4 had 6 TD passes to set a personal best and tie Broadway Joe's club record.

Naturally Ol' #4's feat got dwarfed in NYC by the latest Mets collapse.

Anderson calling the Brewers-Phillies. Fantastic. That shouldn't be biased at all. I mean come on. At least give us Orsillo. I don't see him doing the Red Sox games.

That's why I like Troy. He's an honest analyst and a perfect foil for the snarky Joe Buck. If the Redskins played better than Dallas (which they did), of course Troy will throw the Cowboys under the bus. Way to go, TO. Keep up your whining. At this rate, by Halloween, the Cowboys will be dead.

That's going to be exciting listening to Anderson trying so hard not to be a Brewers homer. I can't wait as a Brewers fan :D

The Stockton curse lives on. Manny will get a crucial grand slam in game 1 as the dodgers beat the Cubs in 4 games.

Nice billboard with three players whose teams did not make the playoffs.

For all those looking at the billboard - I believe that one is last year's. I was in New York and Boston this week and it's Zambrano, Howard, Beckett and Vlad. 4 for 4. So let's give credit where credit is due.
