Video: Kimbo Slice's Attempt To Kill David Blaine

Thursday, September 25, 2008

I'm still not quite sure what the "Dive of Death" actually is, or why John Saunders was hosting the David Blaine special, but I was still certainly intrigued by the Kimbo Slice "gut shot" segment. Here it is in its entirety and I'll see you on the other side for some thoughts....

I don't know why but it still seems like there's some sort of trick involved. It just really looks like there isn't quite full contact on each punch, and while I'd really love to see someone pull this off, there's no way you're standing after a hit like that. I could be wrong though, and if I am....let me know so in the comments.

I don't get it either. You'd at least be winded, wouldn't you? It's like it didn't effect him at all.

Hmmm, well, it doesn't look like Kimbo is really throwing a punch. A punch would come from the shoulders, but his shoulder doesn't move as he rocks his forearm into Blaine like he's swinging a battering ram.

I've never been a fight before so I'd imagine that even that move should hurt a lot, but if there is a trick, that's my guess as to what it is.

David Blaine isn't solely a "magician"... he does things to test the limits of the human body and spends loads of time preparing himself for them (sitting underwater for 9 minutes, hanging upside down for 3 days, getting punched in the stomach etc)

I'm not saying the punch didnt hurt.. but getting hit is a lot different when you can actually brace yourself for it.

Not very impressive, you can be taught how to take a punch like that, if it were ten in a row, things would be different.

Now, if he took a shot or ten to the mush from Kimbo and was still standing, that'd be impressive.

white guy gets ass beat by Kimbo

isnt this how harry houdini died, but it was a small child as opposed to a guy with an awesome beard?

Plus, watch the slow-mo replay you can see him "jump" back a little bit after the punch hits.

If Kimbo hit a a still-standing target (like a heavy bag) it would have more impact than him hitting a target that is moving away from him (a heavy bag on the back swing).

That all sounds obvious, but Blaine pulled it off alright.

Plus he knew where and when the punch was coming. He could time the jump perfectly.

That last comment is absolutely correct. Blaine knew the punch was coming and jumped back both times. Overall, I was not impressed. I was hoping Kimbo would punch him in the face "accidently".

The only thing missing from this was Stuart Scott yelling Boo Yah!

I would have preferred to see Kimbo punch Tony Korky in the face five times.

This is indeed something Houdini could do; and it is related to how he died. After a show in Montreal, Houdini was laying on a couch when a guy asked him if he really could take any blow to the stomach, and Houdini answers "Yes."

So the guy starts punching him in the stomach. Unfortunately, Houdini was A) not prepared, and B) not being treated for his appendicitis (he was sick but refused to see a doctor, so he didn't know that's what he had at the time). So his appendix burst, and because he wasn't getting any medical treatment he collapsed and was hospitalized in Detroit a few days later, and died of an intestinal infection a few days after that.

Looked WWF to me. Its obvious he's not hitting him full force, and yes, Blaine is definitely jumping back with the punch. I'm sure it still stings, but whatever.

Clearly, David Blaine is the baddest man on the planet.

boxing or (whatever kimbo slice does) would be pretty boring if the fighters couldn't take a body blow.
why is this unusual?

In boxing, they have gloves on for those body blows. Don't know how much it makes a difference, but it still has to be a little less painful than a taped fist. Regardless, it's pretty impressive for anybody (David Blaine, another fighter, etc), to take a free shot from Kimbo Slice and remain standing, even with all the training to take body blows.

I think they did the same trick on "Jackass" with Tank Abbot. Although I think he went more to the rib area. The guy on Jackass, to say the least, did not take the punch as well.

Not impressive. Blaine jumped and Kimbo Slice didn't go full force. Both are obvious, thus making it unimpressive and bad.

I assume all tricks that this guy and that Criss Angel douchebag do on TV involves some trickery. I saw some live footage of that dive he did last night and people were booing and pointing out how fake his disappearing into the night was.

Definitely looks like a WWE-style punch to me.

I have some minor fighting experience. Kimbo slice did not generate power from the shoulder. Also,it was not just that Blaine jumped back upon impact, but the whole thing was timed.
As kimbo pumped his fist he was letting Blaine know the moment of impact was approaching. This punch still hurts, but conditioning the abs helps and Blaine's Abs were impressive. A terrible trick as it was so staged and obvious.

David may have been able to survive mister T but can he survive his next stunt? I can not wait to see him take on the Cragg http://familyguts.tv/david-blaine-vs-the-aggro-crag/

I was at Woolman Rink last night with a friend. We waited two hours in the cold to watch David's dive of death. Basically what I seen was him jumping off with a harness and then going to the back of the ice skating rink in the air attached to the ballon with ropes. It was totally fake and everyone was really let down!

People who say Kimbo didn't try hard are crazy. Kimbo is Kimbo -- say what you will about his lack of MMA technique -- but the dude hits hard. Aiming to Blaine's gut with a straight right is awkward unless he really lowers his base. So there's not a ton of force he could generate with this angle.

Still, Kimbo really did throw a hard right and Blaine really did absorb the punch, nothing more, nothing less.

I would have been more impressed if Kimbo had thrown (and Blaine had tried to absorb) a shovel punch to Blaine's gut -- kinda like a hook and uppercut all tucked into one effective body blow.

The first shot looks like Kimbo deliberately moves his fist away from the center part of Blaine's stomach, hitting him with a glancing blow (The camera also moves as the punch happens, causing it to be harder to clearly see the glancing nature of the punch). The second shot actually looks like Blaine drops his left elbow as the punch is coming to protect his rib cage and Kimbo hits him on the lower section of his left elbow/forearm, far more so than the ribcage area (which is what the camera angle makes you think). It also appears that they take advantage of the fact the 2nd shot is on the side farthest away from the camera, adding to the visual trickery (this technique is often used by the WWF on their TV shows to "sell" punches and other violent moves). Given how much money the Elite XC promotion is reportedly spending to keep itself going right now, I wouldn't be surprised if Kimbo allowed himself to be filmed while being unable to knock down Gus Johnson if it meant that he could still beat the snot out of tomato cans and get paid more than $5 and a cup of coffee on the street.

Today, kimbo was on PTI for the five good minutes segment. It was pretty funny actually when talking about the stunt, Tony asked if he had any temptation of punching david blaine in the face. Also there were multiple words of kimbo bleeped out.

I don't see Blaine jumping out of the way, and don't understand how Blaine would feel any better after receiving the hit on his elbow as opposed to his stomach. After both hits Blaine is all smiles. He knows the hit is coming, yes, and he flinches or flexes, yes. But let's see how still you critics can stand before receiving a blow from Kimbo.

David Blaine did to some extent absorb the punches, but not in a traditional way, like I said previously I have some experience and I can tell you that while Kimbo's angle was a bit off that he could certainly have generated more power from the shoulder. He simply did not because it would have been too much.
Fact is that Kimbo can hit and generate power from any angle and from any type of punch.Blaine knew when he was going to get hit and jumped back just enough to deflect some of the impact. I was impressed with his ability to take the punches because Kimbo hits hard even when he is not trying,so kudos to Blaine on just having the balls to step in there and attempt this illusion that somehow he took the hardest punch.

What do you think about the fact that Blaine may have had a rubber or plastic piece surgically implanted beneath the skin? That is a real possibility if you ask me.
