Merril Hoge Still Sharing His Irrational Hate Of Vince Young Whenever He Gets The Chance

Monday, September 22, 2008

Still trying to catch up from being gone the whole weekend, so bear with me this morning as I get things back in gear. Wanted to first share this clip from Pittsburgh’s WDVE radio in which Merril Hoge continuing his over three year campaign of trashing Vince Young. The ESPN analyst was on WDVE to talk Steelers Football when he decided to jump on Young almost right away. Without being prompted by the host, Hoge called Young a "baby" and the he had "no clue" what was going on. From ESPN's AFC South Blog via Sports by Brooks....

Look, I have some irrational hate myself, but good lord....give it a rest already. I still don't think it's been proven that Vince Young is a bad Quarterback, and considering he went to both the Playoffs and the Pro Bowl last year, I would think most people would say he's been successful early on. Sure the guy's got his problems, but to pile on like this when he's down is pretty classless if you ask me.

You're on a Pittsburgh station talking about Week Three, and you're complaining about something a young kid did in Week One. Give it a rest, Merril.

Maybe VY can go on some radio station and talk about how Hoge is the worst fantasy football GM of all time?

Beat Dallas.

While I have an issue with him kicking a guy when he is down. He's more or less correct.

Vince Young is a bad quarterback, if the Titans Defense wasn't so amazing. and the running game wasn't so impressive, people would be talking much more about how bad of a quarterback he actually is.

The problem is, the "experts" always rate the talent of a quarterback by the wins the team. When, if you look at this numbers, he flat out sucks... he is a slower Mike Vick.

Career Numbers:
31 Career Games
22 touchdowns - 32 Interceptions
57% completion Percentage
68.3 Quarterback Rating.

Lets compare that to Rex Grossman, a quarterback most feel sucks.

32 Career Games
31 touchdowns - 33 interceptions
54.3% completion percentage
70.9 Quarterback Rating.

Now, obviously VY can, and does, more with his feet (951 yards and 10tds) but it doesn't remove him from being an overrated and crappy quarterback.

And of course they're going to talk about VY on Pittsburgh radio, I mean, last night's game is a conversation that they might want to avoid. As far as Merrill goes, I don't think it was really necessary to go on that rant about him. The man was contemplating suicide for goodness sakes, give it a freakin' rest. And what headlines has he been in since the week 1 aftermath?

I agree that he isn't a very good quarterback and Jeff's stats are certainly an eye-opener to that, but there was no legit reason to go on that rant that Hoge just went on.

VY has been proven to be a bad QB. Not really sure what confirmation you're waiting for.

Pittsburgh sports radio is usually really good. When I listen online, I like to hear Bill Hargrove and the other guys, but I'll bet Hadjii was asked a Steelers question and he ripped into VY? If Pittsburgh's playing Tennessee, then sure, that mskes sense. Nevertheless, just try to stick to the topic, Hoge, it's not your show.

Everyone harping on Vince's stats needs to go look at John Elways first two years as a starter and you will see a very eery similarity. I'm not saying Vince and Elway are comparable, but the first two years of a season do not a career make. And let's not forget that in 2006 Vince was the Rookie of the Year the same year he almost took a horrible Titans team in to the playoffs by himself.

Hoge has some sort of irrational hatred towards Vince no one understands. He quotes Jeff Fisher during his rant on the radio and -guess what?

Fisher came out today on Nashville radio and said Hoge is full of shit about all of this, by the way. I think Merril needs help.

"I'm not saying Vince and Elway are comparable, but the first two years of a season do not a career make."

Then don't compare them.

"Then don't compare them."

I was making the point that the stats for the first two years are almost identical. I was not comparing the two in any other form. I was simply making the point that the stats are similar.

VY's level of talent is much less of the controversy here... It's that Hoge went out of his way to randomly just start ripping on Young.

And the last point he's making... I don't understand why VY would want to take a 3 mile limo ride to and from the stadium, and it's not something I would do... But how does that at all apply?

" And let's not forget that in 2006 Vince was the Rookie of the Year the same year he almost took a horrible Titans team in to the playoffs by himself. "

A 50% completion rating, 12 TDs -> 13 Picks and a 66 QB Rating isn't taking the team to the playoffs by himself.

First, they were an 8-8 team that squeaked into the playoffs. They started off horribly going 0-5, had a 6-0 run towards the end of the season lead by impressive defense and a solid run game.

Now, don't get me wrong. I'm not saying that he wasn't a factor in turning that team around and pushing them to the playoffs. I am saying he didn't do it anywhere close to single handedly.

I also believe that Marques Colston deserved the RotY award more, even Maurice Jones-Drew was a better candidate... But as I mentioned earlier "Experts" always value quarterbacks based on the wins the team gets.

Jeff,

You are confusing two different seasons.

Vince's rookie year the Titans DID NOT make the playoffs, although they finished 8-8 despite starting 0-5. The Titans that year had the 26th ranked defense in the league and not much else. Vince was the main reason for the seasons turn around that year, and he deserved the MVP for his work as a QB, which carries far more responsibility than a HB or WR. I believe this is the reason he was named ROTY.

The following year defenses adjusted to Vince's playmaking ability and he struggled tremendously. There is no doubt that it was the defense that spurred the Titans to the playoffs that year, along with a solid ground attack in Lendale White and Chris Henry.

You are confusing the two seasons.

Bottom line for me:

Vince Young has anxiety problems...as do I. And it really, really sucks. Stop giving him crap. It's a good thing that Collins is doing well-ish as his replacement. He needs time, and deserves time. That's all.

I credit Hoge for calling out Young for being a soft prima donna. Young seems as if he belongs in another sport where there is no physical or emotional pain. This guy is supposed to be the leader of his team; he can't even lead his own life. The Titans are proving Young's worthiness by going 3-0 and keeping Young away from the QB spot even if healthy.
