Tigers-White Sox "Makeup Game For A One Game Playoff Game": Open Thread
Monday, September 29, 2008
One of the great benefits of working from home is being able to watch daytime events, like Playoff Baseball and the NCAA Tournament, without having to come up with new lies every year to tell to your boss. I always love to help those out who are stuck at work, or don't have access to the game, so this spot will serve as your goto for updates, quotes and videos of the game.
Dave O'Brien, Orel Hershiser and Steve Phillips are on the call for the game airing on ESPN2 and your pitching matchup is Freddy Garcia against Gavin Floyd. Leave your predictions and thoughts in the comment section and I'll update this spot throughout the game.
Update: The tarp is on the field and we're looking at a bit of a rain delay. Dave O'Brien promises Baseball in a few, so I'll update you when I know what the start time is.
Update #2: It's 5pm and we're underway! Orel Hershiser is talking about energy bars and eight track players for some reason. They must have gone stir-crazy during this three hour delay. If anything exciting goes down I'll be sure to grab the video and put it up in this spot. If not, I'll see you for Monday Night Football.
Update #3: Alexei Ramirez broke a 2-2 with a grand slam in the sixth and the White Sox are currently batting in the bottom of the 8th. I'll have video of that and the final few outs up shortly following the game.
Update #4: The Sox win it 8-2 and there will be a one-game Playoff tomorrow with the Twins coming to Chicago. The game will air on on TBS at 7:30pm.

ESPNEWS is on because of the delay...
Every 15 minutes they're doing an update, just saying baseball is "on the way". After the 2nd or 3rd one I noticed they're just replaying the same 10 second clip over and over (you can tell by the repetitive camera angles and same people walking through the picture). You'd think that maybe they could stop to give some kind of weather update or ETA for game time. Oh well, it's ESPN...
On WGN, they said it was supposed to start at 2:30 CDT.
Selig should've stepped in and moved this game to Milwaukee.
Go Tigers!
Doesn't look like there's going to be baseball until roughly 4 Central, but once it starts it doesn't look like there will be any other major delays.
i can't wait for this to start. im surprised that selig hasnt moved this game to milwaukee yet.
just imagine what they would have done if it WAS rained out ... day-night DH with two different teams in Chicago? or Milwaukee? why not move the whole thing to Minnesota, that wouldn't be too much of an advantage would it?
MLB is stupid, not the sport, the people running it.
I still can't find a start time anywhere.
WGN is saying 5pm eastern. Rain until 4:30, then half an hour or so to remove the tarp and prepare the field.
I hope the rain stops soon. I wanted to see Sheffield screw himself into the ground trying to get #500 and the possibility of DJ finally choking Hawk Harrelson on his last day on the TV broadcast.
First pitch is at 5:00 according to ESPN.
Cool. Anything to stop these Becker & Funniest Pets & People reruns on WGN America.
rick, just be comforted in knowing that steve stone won't take any shit from hawk and WILL strangle him. He's called Farmer out on his many exaggerations throughout the year, and next year's pairing of Hawk-Stone is a homicide waiting to happen.
Anon 4:43 - Now while I wouldnt mind an ol' fashioned Hawk-strangling, wouldnt it just be easier to fire Harrelson all together? All these years, I wonder why he hasn't. How many people does he know that his firing has not come to pass?
Hersheiser was also talking about cranking up the car.
Model T, I presume...
speaking of excuses to get out of work... whats the best one youve done/heard of. the best ive heard of was on mike and mike a viewer said that they were geting a new car the weekend of march madness, so he called into work and said he was in an accident and hurt his back or neck or something and said he was gonna miss work thursday and friday. then on monday he drove in with a new car. anyone elses?
ESPN360.com is streaming the game.
ESPN Graphics Department: Sheffield didn't hit all 499 home runs this season.
Dave O'Brien, after seeing a kid in the bleachers standing on his chair or something... "Well it looks like he's out of school and hopped up on cotton candy."
I thought Hersh was pretty good talking about visual cues just now.
And Thorne has a great voice for baseball, but maybe that's because I watch too much college baseball. How does that translate to hockey?
Lucky Bastards.
I'm stuck watching DJ and Hawk call this game.
Blackouts are turrible.
The Tigers bring in Galarga, a starter, to replace Garcia. If the game was played when it was supposed to be one of the Tiger's crappy bullpen guys would have come in and blown it. If we win how long till Ozzie complains?
.00001 seconds.
The ESPN guys were more excited about the grand slam than the WGN crew.
Hey rick james bible owner, according to Kenny Mayne, "Not all of them were hit this year, that'd be some sort of record."
I don't believe you at all.
Clearly you are a liar.
Alex, that's because Hawk was too busy having a heart attack
They flipped out in the booth as soon as it left the bat. Video coming shortly.
does everyone else have ESPNEWS on espn2 right now? i live in grand rapids and i don't know if the game is blacked out here, or they're just showing ESPNEWS en lieu of the rain delay
