Your MLB Announcing Schedule For The Weekend Of 9/20

Friday, September 19, 2008

Well we're getting close to the end of the regular season and with just two weekends to go, FOX has brought out the big guns. Yes folks, we get another dose of Josh Lewin and the dulcet stylings of NASCAR's Mike Joy!

Most of the country gets a seemingly worthless Cards-Cubs game because Chicago's magic number is two, and TBS just decided to air the same Sox-Blue Jays matchup that was on the station last weekend. If you don't already have and MLB.com account, I suggest that you sign up for one this weekend. Here's your schedule....

Now I like Mike Joy for Nascar, but for baseball that is going to be a possible trainwreck. Since I am here in Philly and don't get to hear his presentation, I hope AA will give us some video feedback on his performance.

Mike Joy doesn't look like he knows anything about baseball AKA Joe Morgan Syndrome.

I don't watch baseball for the most part, but the Twins and Rays are good teams, and FOX treats them like crap with this announcing pair. A NASCAR guy and Joe Magrane?

The Cubs are going to win their division barring a collapse and the Cardinals are a few games back in the wild card and they get the top team?

I'm actually looking forward to Mike Joy, it'll be something different. I've listened to him do NASCAR races for a long time, and he's one of the better announcers in NASCAR, so it should be fun to hear him do something different.

SSReporters, while I agree with your point when the top team includes Tim McCarver it's really no great honor.

TBS is lazy with their game selection.

With the Mets and Phillies battling the Brewers for the wildcard, why is the Milwaukee game going to the Philadelphia market but not the New York market?

Wikipedia mentions prior MLB announcing experience for Joy, but it doesn't mention specifics, and I for the life of me can't ever remember him doing any prior baseball work. I'd be very curious to see how well he performs. Hopefully we can get some video clips from the game.

Being a Nascar fan, I don't mind Joy... HOWEVER

Fuck Fox. Fuck Milwaukee. Not only do I miss the Cubs game, I have to put up with Brian Anderson AND Fox Sports?

Grrrr

If you don't want to put up with Brian Anderson, your in bad luck. Anderson will be working on the MLB playoffs on TBS this year.

Damn, Rob In WI, I think you're more upset than Gary Sheffield was after Carmona hit him.

Cubs can clinch with a win today. As is typical Fox did not drop Brewers-Reds to concentrate on the Cubbies.

South Florida and Palm Beach are getting the wrong game; Marlins have climbed back into the NL wild-card chase. ABC will clean up with Canes-Aggies throughout the Sunshine State.

Watching the Rays game now. Brian, you're right. He is sounding like a train wreck. He seems sooooo out of place calling baseball. That's why Summerall didn't do it.

New York is getting the Brewers-Reds right now. It may have been a last second change, with Milwaukee being in a contest with the Mets for the Wild Card spot. Either way, I commend Fox for doing what was right and providing New York with a game that was meaningful to them. While the Cubs-Cardinals has the rivalry aspect, it probably would have had little draw to New York baseball fans.

First of all...
I'm a fan of Mike Joy - for NASCAR. He is terrible today doing this Rays game. Announcers can ruin games and being a Rays fan, he's ruining the day we clinch our first playoff birth. That's sad.

Secondly...
Joe Magrane is pretty good. I have enjoyed FOX putting him on these Saturday games. He does the local station games also and does a good job. The Rays have a good team in Dwayne Staats and Joe Magrane.

Mike Joy sucks.

For a novice, Mike did alright, but just seemed a step behind at times. I can say from experience that it takes a long time calling a sport like baseball to get into the rhythm of things. Mainly when there are big moments and multiple things happening on the field at once (i.e. an RBI-double with runners cycling around the bases).

Regardless, good job but bad marks for Fox putting up a huge graphic over the celebration saying "postseason baseball on Fox returns October 9th." They do that too often and ruined the celebration video with a third of the screen obscured.

I like Joy in NASCAR, but he was god-awful during the Rays game. I'm not going to extremes when I say he has no business in the baseball booth.

I'm surprised no one caught the Tim McCarver soundbite when they asked that WWE diva to introduce the Cards' lineup and the only things she says are GO CUBS!!! and not to let Albert Pujols hit a home run, then she makes an advance on Tim. And Tim barks: I THOUGHT SHE WAS GOING TO GIVE THE LINEUPS ON THE CARDS, AS FAR AS HER INVITATION, I'LL HAVE TO TAKE A INTENTIONAL PASS ON THAT!!! lol. Say what you will about Tim, but in my opinion, thumbs up for blasting that diva for not giving the Cards' lineup.

Instead of using a baseball novice like Joy, wouldn't it make far more sense for FOX to just employ the local TV pxp guy for one of the teams? They wouldn't be working that day anyway, due to FOX exclusivity.
