NFL Open Thread - Week 3 Late Games

Sunday, September 21, 2008

(Considering the Saints' defense, I think Jay will find his happy place on the field today. Or, I hope he does. Also, Casa Bonita's food is AWFUL. Stay away if you're ever in Denver.)

Things we've learned so far today:

1. Ronnie Brown is a MEAST. 4 TDs rushing, 100+ yards, 1 TD passing. Chad Pennington completed a staggering 85% of his passes (as I write this, he is 17/20 with 226 yards), and New England screwed up my suicide pool by losing.
2. "With the first pick in the 2009 NFL Draft, the Kansas City Chiefs select....Matthew Stafford, quarterback, from the University of Georgia." (Note to Lions fans: your team will screw up the first pick by beating the Rams.) Michael Turner has 3 rushing TDs.
3. Cardinals-Skins is a truly enjoyable aerial assault of a game. Jason Campbell just hit another wide-open receiver, but the score got called back on a penalty.
4. Brandon Lloyd caught an offensive touchdown pass from Kyle Orton. Our world is at an end.
5. Carson Palmer just hit Housh for a TD, but the G-men just got into the end zone, so they're back up by three again in a game that's closer than it has any right to be.
6. This whole Buffalo being good thing didn't last long; also, Oakland may actually be more than mediocre. If JaMarcus Russell learns how to work with a passing offense, yikes.

Once again, you can find the maps and your game here. Fox has saddled me with the Lions-Niners cripple fight, so I'll have Pitt-Philly on the tube while hoping I can find a stream of New Orleans-Denver.

Stay tuned for the Cowboys-Packers live blog after the late games, of course.

CBS:

Pittsburgh at Philadelphia - Jim Nantz, Phil Simms
Jacksonville at Indianapolis - Dick Enberg, Randy Cross
Cleveland at Baltimore - Bill Macatee, Steve Beuerlein

FOX:

New Orleans at Denver - Joe Buck, Troy Aikman
Detroit at San Francisco - Dick Stockton, Brian Baldinger, Brian Billick
St. Louis at Seattle - Matt Vasgersian, J.C. Pearson

The Bills just eked it out with a last second FG. Giants and Cincy and Tampa and Chicago are both in OT.

It was funny reading Casa Bonita because I can't even read it silently without the having the Cartman voice in my head.

That and I just talked about an accidental Dierdorf SP reference.

Plaxico Burress catches EVERYTHING that's even in his remote vicinity.

I need the help of someone with good tech skills. I am flipping back from football to Ryder cup, and there is an Sunday Night Football ad for tonight's game with Al Michaels (the one where he says Tony Romo is "a pleasure to watch"). At the end of the spot, I swear the announcer says "Only on ABC". Maybe I'm nuts, but I rewound it and it sounds like ABC to me.

Jay Cutler CANNOT BE CONTAINED.

Two TD passes in the first quarter, 14-3, Denver.

The only thing uglier than the Saints defense are the Broncos' alternate orange home unis. What the Broncos should do is have the old orange home throwback, Buffalo Bills-style.

Leave it to Seattle to muff a punt and let the Rams score a field goal.

Still 17-3, and the Rams couldn't even get it to the red zone.

Well the Saints are toast.

Following a pass interference by Jacksonville, Enburg said "my wife never dances that close to me"

The Lions don't play the Rams this year. Their #1 draft pick dream is alive and well.

Anon - thanks for the clarification, I thought the NFC North and NFC West played each other this year.

Denver just stuffed NO on a fourth down at the goal line, but NO got a safety on the next play. WTF?

Will CBS make up their mind on score things, either use a bug or abandon it to place a banner at the top or bottom!

At about the 7:30 mark of the 2nd quarter, Phil Simms said "it pains me to see QBs to get hit like that"

It pains me to have to listen to you Phil.

Also after a "Inside the NFL" plug, SImms said dont listen to me, I give bad opinions.

I hope CBS execs were listening.

The defenses in NO-Denver are non-existent. At least D.J. Williams got a huge 3rd down stop.

34-32, Broncos, for now.

MARTIN GRAMATICA HOOKED IT.

Whew. C'mon, guys, you've got 1:50 to not screw it up.

Big Ben just got whacked by Philly today.

I just saw the note about the Bronc's Uni's... one of the CBS studio guys, I can't remember who, referred to those Uni's as "dapper."

The Bills won a game they would've spent the past decade losing. Trent Edwards was 14 of 19 in the fourth quarter for almost 200 yards. Get your fucking facts straight before you say "this whole Buffalo being good thing didn't last long." Jackass.

Come on, the Lions will grab a receiver with the first pick not a QB.

Let's not forget the Bills were playing Oakland. Until proven otherwise, the Raiders are losers.

Nantz said the Broncos' uniforms were dapper. I agree. I grew up cheering for the orange-clad Broncos and it just looks right. Go Broncos!
